Please Pass Me That

On the day Han Ting moved into a shared apartment in the urban village, all she had to her name was a newly bought electric scooter, a delivery box, and debt to pay off every month.

Wen Yu lived in the same apartment. She got up at three in the morning to steam rice, then sold rice balls outside an elementary school. Her smile made it seem like she wasn't afraid of hardship, but every penny had to be divided between rent, medicine for her grandmother, and a new schoolbag for her little sister.

At first, they were just roommates who passed each other in their shared space.

"Please pass me that."

It began with a roll of tape, a breakfast, and a cup of unsweetened soy milk.

Sometimes things went wrong, of course. They couldn't sell all the rice balls, their raincoats leaked, someone fell off their scooter while delivering food, and the light in their tiny room flickered on and off.

Two people making a living on the city's margins slowly learned to reach out to each other, until they were holding hands.
