Shadows loomed everywhere. The sticky soil slowly rose, radiating twisted lines of earth. Beneath a streetlight, it cast a towering shadow that bore no resemblance to its original shape. A jumble of hissing sounds seemed to come from far away, echoing as they traveled.

It was a servant of the Mother Goddess, an incarnation of her image. Anyone who saw it would suffer indescribable harm and lose an unpredictable amount of SAN.

Cheng Zhi heard her teammate let out a stifled cry of pain.

She did not turn around. She lowered her eyes, switched on her flashlight, and walked forward.

Her boots splashed through the spreading pools of filthy water. Cheng Zhi took off her hood with one hand and met the hissing creature's gaze with cold eyes.

With the other hand, she drew a dagger and smoothly plunged it into the body dripping with black slime.

The servant creature's hissing abruptly stopped.

In the black holes that might have been called eyes, fear appeared for the first time.

The woman's voice was low and icy. "How do I find Aiswell?"

"Tell me, and you won't want this to be the last time you're summoned."
