Would You Like to Come in for a Drink?

The first time he saw Jiang Yin, it was on a rainy day.

The thin, frail girl in black held a black umbrella and crouched at the corner of an alley, knees slightly bent as she stroked a rain-soaked stray calico trembling with cold.

The rusty yellow rain fell against her skirt. She simply stroked the cat again and again, her expression quiet and distant.

At the time, he thought that if his future stepsister were like this, he wouldn't mind.

They didn't have to be family. Just being friends would be nice.

The second time he saw Jiang Yin was at a quiet bar, at a welcome-home party for a friend returning from abroad.

Music and dancing filled the room, the lights hazy and dreamlike.

She held a microphone onstage, softly singing a folk song in a low, clear, husky voice.

His friend said she was the bar's lead singer.

Half the men present had come for her.

The third time he saw Jiang Yin was after their parents' engagement party had ended.

He had heard that she was allergic to ultraviolet light, so he drove over to bring her the umbrella, hat, and gloves she'd left at the banquet.

She opened the door for him.

He saw a wall of red wine.

Blood red, pure, its strange fragrance lingering in the night.

"You haven't wiped the wine from the corner of your mouth."

At the sound of his warm, clear voice, the girl wiped her lips and smiled faintly.

"Thank you. But would you like to come in for a drink?"

He said yes.
