The Scientific World of Conan’s Kvass

The blurb for my upcoming story, “GIN's Second Personality,” is at the bottom.] Kvass is a fermented bread drink originating in Russia and Ukraine. It usually contains about one percent alcohol, so it's not quite liquor, but it doesn't seem to count as a soft drink either. At the distillery, Kvass is still pondering what category it belongs to. Hagiwara skipped decades of detours compared to his colleagues and met an untimely end just one month after graduation. Perhaps some magical girl passing by took pity on him and gave him a chance to start over. Even after being reborn as a cat, Hagiwara retains his noble human nature. With a sharp eye for choosing people and a knack for acting cute and begging for affection, he easily rises to the top of the cat world, enjoying fish, shrimp, crab, shellfish, chicken, duck, pork, and beef. Then he picks up a human, and his joy turns to misery: eating garbage, sleeping under a bridge, getting bamboo-shoot stir-fry three times a day, spying, poisoning, surveillance, kidnapping... Whenever he wakes with a start in the middle of the night, he wistfully takes a puff of catnip and wonders: If this is the price of having a human servant, isn't this cat's rear end a little too precious? Haruyuzu Yui is a fortune-teller and a committed materialist. She often advises tearful clients begging to pay for good luck not to be superstitious, to believe in science, and to accept bankruptcy and prison like everyone else. As a result, Yui's business is unstable. One day, an enraged client runs her over with a car. After the classic transmigration-by-car-accident, Yui's life doesn't change much. She still tells fortunes, makes money, and saves up for medical bills. The only problem is that her auditory hallucinations seem to have gotten worse. Now even cats are talking. It's all a hallucination. Just a hallucination. [Reader Warnings] This isn't a fluffy comfort story. There is comfort, but I can't promise everyone will be spared a tragic ending. It's not exclusively a Detective Conan story. It also includes some Kuroko's Basketball and The Prince of Tennis. You can still enjoy it without knowing either sports series. I originally chose “lighthearted” because I didn't think a person turning into a cat counted as serious fiction, but the writing really isn't that light, so I changed the tag to “serious.” Hagi, the heroine, and other members of the good guys will suffer injuries, bleeding, and emotional distress. The heroine is an ordinary person with a bit of cleverness and an ability most people would find hard to understand. “Ordinary” refers to her behavior and emotional resilience. She'll do her best to avoid danger, but she can make mistakes and poor decisions, and she may break down. The distillery is portrayed realistically: cold-blooded and merciless, with no hesitation about harming people. The heroine has no plot armor. To balance the books, the administrators decide to find an ordinary person with Helen Keller's determination and disabilities, and use up the extra wish-granting machine. It doesn't matter if she wishes for world peace, good health, or a trillion in cash! It's just a low-magic, low-martial-arts world. They could even make her ruler of the Earth! · · · After much back and forth, Seiyo receives a full-immersion gaming setup as compensation for the delay in granting her wish. With the regret of failing to destroy the world again today, Seiyo enters the game “Second Personality” and chooses a character completely unlike herself: A man, a 1.9-meter-tall muscleman, left-handed, non-East Asian, with long silver hair...
