Ming Shang was the daughter of a palace seamstress. Because of her exceptional embroidery, the Empress Dowager raised her by her side. In the winter of the year she came of age, Crown Prince Xiao Jingzhi went to the Empress Dowager's palace and asked for her as his concubine.
Ming Shang had heard that the Crown Prince was humble, gentle, restrained, and proper. She only hoped he would treat her well.
As she wished, Xiao Jingzhi told her he loved her and, in the throes of passion, promised to make her Crown Princess.
Ming Shang was content, serving him devotedly.
Before long, Ming Shang became pregnant. When she happily told Xiao Jingzhi, however, his usually gentle expression turned cold. "Shangshang, this child shouldn't have been born into this world."
On the day Xiao Jingzhi ascended the throne, Ming Shang learned that a woman had been living all along in Zhaohua Hall in the Eastern Palace. She was Xiao Jingzhi's beloved and his empress, the wife in his heart. She had never been.
The woman forced her to drink poisoned wine. Only then did Ming Shang understand why Xiao Jingzhi had said her child shouldn't have been born into this world.
As a concubine, she should not have borne him a child before he married his principal wife.
When Ming Shang opened her eyes again, she was back in that winter, with Xiao Jingzhi asking the Empress Dowager for her hand. Looking at the man before her, dignified and virtuous as a moonlit breeze, Ming Shang flatly refused.
After being deceived by his lies for an entire lifetime, she couldn't bear to look at him even once in her new life.
The story of Crown Prince Xiao Jingzhi asking to marry Ming Shang, the embroiderer raised by the Empress Dowager, only to be flatly rejected, spread throughout the capital. Everyone was baffled, including Xiao Jingzhi himself.
He had even promised her the position of Crown Princess. Why wouldn't she spare him a glance?
At the spring flower-viewing banquet, he stood by the lotus pond and watched helplessly as she chatted and laughed with another man. At the summer retreat, he watched her accept a gift from another man, the veins on the back of his hand standing out. He could bear it no longer.
But all she said was, "Does the Crown Prince also have a say in whom I marry?"
Later, the proud and noble Crown Prince knelt before Ming Shang, his hands trembling as he cupped her lovely face. His voice hoarse, he said, "Shangshang, I give you my heart."
But she didn't want it anymore.
