Meals in the Mountains

After seven years of battling cancer, Wen Shi'an finally lost. When he opened his eyes, he had transmigrated to a small village in ancient times.

His house was bare, the rice jar nearly empty, and the only thing he had was a barren vegetable patch.

He rolled up his sleeves and started a fire to cook.

It was good to be alive.

He pinched off the tender tips of wild greens on the back hill, mixed them with wild garlic, and drizzled them with a spoonful of homemade fragrant rice vinegar.

He stewed crucian carp from the river until the broth turned milky white, then added a few cubes of tofu. It was so delicious his eyebrows nearly fell off.

Even the coarsest millet, steamed and mashed into a ball, could be wrapped in sesame seeds and griddled into fragrant rice cakes that filled the whole village with their aroma.

Life flowed slowly and gently, like the stream in front of his door.

One day, Wen Shi'an found an injured man by the stream.

The man's name was Ning Xiao. He was a hunter from the mountain, tall and broad-shouldered, quiet and imposing, with a fierce look that made the village children avoid him.

Only Wen Shi'an knew that this man would pick the freshest mushrooms for him in the morning,

head out in the rain to catch him the fattest fish,

kneel by the stove to add firewood for him,

and, after he finished his soup, gently wipe a drop from his lips with a rough fingertip.

The finest taste in life is sharing the passing seasons with you, letting our days together flow gently by.
