After Uzumaki Akiha died and came back to life, she realized she seemed to have read the script.
She had read it, but not to the end.
And it seemed someone had changed the script before the show was finished.
Warning:
A wildly over-the-top, old-school Mary Sue setup. The only thing that's not very Mary Sue about it is probably that the heroine isn't adored by everyone. orz
Uchiha Itachi x original female protagonist. A heroine who grows over time + a male lead whose nature is anyone's guess. There is a pairing and a substantial romantic storyline, but this is not aimed at otome readers. The focus is on the plot, and the story is a slow burn.
She's a native of the shinobi world. She has had some limited experience with modern life, but doesn't think much like a modern person. The reason she can be paired with Itachi is that their outlooks actually align in some ways, even down to the fact that neither of them ranks the other as their number one priority. _(:з)∠)_
So, while the original story follows one person down a path with no turning back, this one is about two people pulling each other to their limits before finally reaching a happy ending.
People who think alike don't always follow the same path. They may instead hold each other back, serve as mirrors for one another, and ultimately change each other. That's probably what this story is about.
P.S. Tsugumo Nanako is an important character and an older mentor figure.
There are several prominent original characters, as well as powers outside the ninja system. It's partly a crossover with other worlds, mainly featuring original characters whose settings come from other anime, though it doesn't really involve those series' systems. This also leads to original characters haunting canon characters and even bringing them back from the dead, but other worlds won't be explored until after the Naruto plot is finished, and will probably get a separate story.
Theme: It is never the "script" that determines fate, but the people in the world themselves.
