Du Wenqing and Shi Shu both serve in the Criminal Investigation Division of the Haishi Public Security Bureau. They have spent years caught up in major cases, and not only have they suffered the Seven Killings curse, but time itself has been against them: they've both been single for years.

In recent years, Haishi has become a den of evil, with mountains of corpses, bloodshed, and rampant criminal gangs... Drug trafficking isn't even the worst of it, just small potatoes.

This inexplicable force has also shrouded the city in an unshakable darkness.

Du Wenqing and Shi Shu never let their cases suffer, but they let their chances at a happy marriage go completely to waste.

One day, for reasons no one could explain, under some pretext or theory, Captain Du Wenqing abused his position and claimed Shi Shu for himself.

Nearly ten years passed in a flash. People joked that they were a couple's act, teasing that even in life and death, they were a perfect pair.

"Hmph. Die? I'm not dying with him," Shi Shu said.

After nearly ten years of pent-up defiance, Shi Shu left a letter for Du Wenqing and moved ten kilometers away to the Narcotics Bureau.

Du Wenqing scoffed. He could get there on his electric scooter.

And why was he supposed to go looking? Did he really think of Shi Shu as his boyfriend or something?

He'd rather cut himself in half, thanks.

Another year passed, and the begonias bloomed. News of Shi Shu gradually faded away like the wind.

When they met again, Shi Shu seemed different. He was laughing and chatting with someone Du Wenqing had spent a year investigating, and on top of that... he even gave Du Wenqing the evil eye.

With their sides of right and wrong so clearly divided, at odds like fire and water, Du Wenqing didn't want to hide his feelings. Honestly, he found it pretty thrilling.

He climbed into Shi Shu's room in the dead of night, wondering how to confess that he'd spent half his life loving him.

A chilling voice echoed through the room: "Du Wenqing, either I die, or you live."

Du Wenqing couldn't speak. Tears came first, and his breath caught in his throat. He said, "Why didn't you check your own wallet back then? Are you the only one allowed to leave notes for people?"

Shi Shu glanced at him suspiciously, then pretended not to care as he hurried to find his wallet. Sure enough, there was a yellowed note, carrying a message from long ago and the warmth of its writer: Want to give it a try?
