Raising Adorable Kids in the Gobi Desert [1960s]

Zhong Siyan transmigrates into the younger sister of a soldier in a Gobi Desert construction corps, and marries a technician at an agricultural science institute.

Two years into their marriage, Zhong Siyan has a job during the day and still has to find time to look after the children. Fortunately, her mother, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law help care for the little ones.

She has to look after her eldest brother's three children. Her sister-in-law is frail and often ill, and later she and her eldest brother live apart, though their relationship is still quite good.

Later, her husband is transferred elsewhere to work on construction projects, too.

Zhong Siyan: I guess raising children is my lot in life, but I really do like kids.

Her eldest brother has three children, and she has two of her own.

Although the children grow up in the Gobi Desert, under the care of Zhong Siyan and the others, they are rosy-cheeked and adorable, no less lovely than hothouse flowers.

Every day, Zhong Siyan tries to get on good terms with the head cook in the canteen, so he might give her a little extra meat for the children during holidays and festivals.

She is an agronomist herself, and secretly grows grapes, Hami melons, and sweet pears to supplement the children's nutrition.

With so many children in the family, they usually eat corn buns. When times are good, they can have more meat, eggs, dumplings, and fine wheat noodles.

The Gobi Desert goes from having nothing to having everything they need.

People say every generation has its own mission. After Zhong Siyan finally raises the children to adulthood, she understands what that means.
