The Unicorn's Diary

The day after her argument with He Lusheng, Yin Xiao was chatting with her best friend outside the classroom.

She wasn't listening to a word her friend said. She picked at the glue on the window with one finger and kept sneaking glances into the classroom.

The boy sat with his head down, solving problems through his headphones, completely out of place amid the noisy students enjoying their break.

"Did you two have another fight?" her friend asked.

Yin Xiao leaned against the wall and looked toward the opposite building, letting out a long sigh. "You wouldn't understand."

Suddenly, a warm earbud slipped into her ear. The boy's voice was calm. "Give this a listen. It's pretty good."

Music spilled from the tiny earbud into the cacophonous hallway. Yin Xiao closed her eyes.

He Lusheng suddenly leaned closer and whispered in her ear, "Wait for me after class."

"Hm?" Yin Xiao was startled. She opened her eyes and turned her head, her cheek brushing lightly against his hair. The touch was slight, but somehow charged.

Her heart pounded. Doing her best to stay composed, she looked into the boy's deep, dark eyes. "What?"

When the music ended, Yin Xiao returned the earbud to He Lusheng.

He took it with his eyes lowered and said calmly, "I'll help you review tonight."

"Oh? We're reviewing?" Yin Xiao sounded a little disappointed.

He wound up the cord. "You're the one who doesn't want to. Don't blame me when your dad asks."

Yin Xiao fell silent. After hesitating a moment, she poked the back of his hand with one finger.

He looked up.

"So, does this mean we've made up?" Yin Xiao asked softly.

He Lusheng looked at her, then suddenly laughed. "I've been waiting here for you all day. What do you think?"
