Green Plum and Green Tea

#

“Xu You is such a phony, a total green tea.”

From childhood onward, plenty of girls who confessed to Song Shun warned him to watch out for Xu You.

“Green tea” was the word Song Shun heard most often to describe her.

He would turn down their confessions with a cold expression, then turn around and spot Xu You hiding in a corner, watching him timidly. When she caught his eye, she would duck back like a startled kitten.

A moment later, she would peek out again and smile sweetly at him.

Song Shun’s stern features would soften, and he would beckon the girl over, thinking, not for the first time: Youyou is so cute. How could she have any bad intentions?

They had grown up together. How could he not know her?

But later, Song Shun realized that he truly didn’t know her at all.

--

Xu You had been in love with her childhood friend for five years, from high school through college. She watched him coldly reject one confession after another, like an ascetic unmoved by worldly desires.

Over time, the wild hope in her heart couldn’t help but blossom.

Xu You gazed silently at the back standing between her and the others and thought: Maybe I should give it a try, too?

--

Song Shun had always thought that if he had a little sister, she would be just like Xu You.

But with Xu You around, he didn’t need a sister anyway.

Until one day, after playing basketball, he went to find Xu You and saw her wearing his red team jersey. Her pale skin glowed like spring snow in the sunshine, and her eyes curved as she smiled, beautiful enough to captivate a city.

Across from her stood a tall teammate, blushing beneath her smile, his gaze evasive, his affection plain to see.
