Wei Zhuo met Chi Yingsen when he was sixteen.
The small town had its first rain since the start of summer. Wei Zhuo had been suspended for fighting with students from another school, so with nothing better to do, he helped an elderly neighbor watch her convenience store.
Later, the door swung open. The rain grew louder, the doorbell chimed softly, and a boy about his age stepped inside.
He wore a hoodie. His hood, hair, and the bandages on his face were all soaked through.
He looked fierce, like a wolf caught in the rain.
Wei Zhuo knew who he was. The kid had only moved here a few days ago, but he'd already made quite a racket. In just three days, he'd gotten into five noisy fights with his family.
The neighbors all warned Wei Zhuo to stay away from the fierce little punk, but they seemed to have forgotten that Wei Zhuo wasn't exactly a good kid himself.
That day, Chi Yingsen bought a pack of cigarettes and asked Wei Zhuo for a light.
Wei Zhuo flicked open his lighter. The dangerous-looking boy, still dripping wet, cupped the flame and leaned close to light his cigarette. Wei Zhuo couldn't help raising an eyebrow.
"You're new around here. Want to be friends?"
Chi Yingsen kept his eyes lowered. When the cigarette tip finally caught, he gave a cold laugh, smoke spilling from his lips and clouding the air, blurring Wei Zhuo's view.
Wei Zhuo saw only indifference in his eyes. His voice was as cold as the March rain outside.
"Not interested."
That day, Chi Yingsen finished his cigarette under the eaves, then walked alone into the rain.
Some time later, on a day with the same torrential rain as when they'd first met, the drenched boy knocked on Wei Zhuo's door.
Just like before, Wei Zhuo lit a cigarette for him and teased him with a smile.
"Didn't you say you weren't interested in friends?"
The faint flame was reflected in Chi Yingsen's eyes. His voice was still cold and his tone casual, but what he said was:
"I'm interested in you."
