But the male supporting character was still only a supporting character, and no match for the hero. Thanks to the hero's machinations, he soon got written out, too.

After their engagement, Lin Qiu had a dream. In the dream, his fiance went into the mountains to hunt in order to save enough money for their wedding, and died at the hands of a bear.

Since he had yet to marry, he became the jinx who brought death to husbands, a pariah talked about throughout the surrounding villages. His family wouldn't have him and threw him out.

Afterward, he devoted himself to raising An Ge'er. The two depended on each other for ten years, until An Ge'er was engaged. They weren't well-off, but they lived in peace.

Meanwhile, Lin Qiu was all alone. After years of hardship and exhaustion, he died of illness in his early forties.

Only after his death did he learn that they were merely characters in a story, and he was just a minor character meant to serve as a contrast to his cousin Lin Jin.

Although his cousin Lin Jin was a ge'er, the entire Lin family doted on him. The two of them were treated like night and day. When they grew up, Lin Qiu's husband died at the hands of a bear, and Lin Qiu was driven out as a jinx, living a life of poverty and hardship. Lin Jin, on the other hand, married a scholar from the village. The scholar passed the imperial examinations, and Lin Jin became an official's husband.

It was also in that dream that Lin Qiu learned his cousin had a soul from another world inside him.

After waking up, Lin Qiu felt lost. His engagement had already been settled, so breaking it off was impossible. He didn't envy Lin Jin's good life, but he was afraid of living out half his life the way he had in the dream.

So he had to change his fate. He would start by changing the fate of his short-lived fiance and saving him.

Xiao Yan thought only of earning money to pay for his young father's medical care and raise his younger brother. He had never considered getting married.

But his young father was anxious, always afraid he would die before seeing Xiao Yan marry and have a child. So Xiao Yan could only follow his father's arrangements and agree to an engagement.

His betrothed was also a ge'er from the village, but Xiao Yan barely knew anything about him. He didn't mind. Marriage was the same whoever he married, as long as his husband was a good person. His husband could manage the household, while he earned money to support the family.
