After her betrothal, Lin Qiu had a dream. In it, her fiancé went into the mountains to hunt, hoping to save enough money for their wedding, and was killed by a blind bear.
Unmarried, she became the jinx everyone in the area called a husband-killer. Her family refused to take her in and drove her out.
When she was lost and had nowhere to go, her fiancé's little father found her, took her home, and married her to her fiancé's memorial tablet.
Her little father was in poor health and devastated by the loss of his son. He lasted barely a month before passing away, entrusting his eight-year-old son, An Ge'er, to her before he died.
Lin Qiu knew that her little father had taken her in not only because they were both ge'er and he pitied her for having nowhere else to go, but also because he knew his health was failing and wanted to find someone he could entrust An Ge'er to.
Even knowing he had that in mind, she agreed and felt grateful. She knew that if her little father hadn't come for her that day, she might have taken her own life.
After that, she devoted herself to raising An Ge'er. They depended on each other for ten years, until An Ge'er was betrothed. Their life was not prosperous, but it was stable.
She was left all alone, and after years of hardship and toil, she fell ill and died in her early forties.
Only after her death did she learn that they were merely characters in a story, and that she was a minor character whose purpose was to serve as a foil to her younger cousin, Lin Jin.
Though her cousin Lin Jin was also a ge'er, the entire Lin family doted on him. Their treatment of the two cousins was like heaven and earth. When they grew up, Lin Qiu's husband was killed by a blind bear, and she was driven out as a jinx, living a life of hardship and poverty. Lin Jin, on the other hand, married a scholar from the village. He passed the imperial examinations, and Lin Jin became an official's spouse.
It was also in that dream that Lin Qiu learned that her cousin's body was inhabited by a soul from another world.
When she woke up, Lin Qiu was at a loss. Her betrothal was already settled, and calling it off was impossible. She did not envy Lin Jin's good life, but she was afraid she would truly spend half her life just as she had in the dream.
So she had to change her fate. She would start by changing her short-lived fiancé's fate and saving him.
The gong's perspective:
Xiao Yan only wanted to make money, pay for his little father's treatment, and raise his younger brother. He had never thought of getting married.
But his little father was anxious, always afraid he would die before seeing Xiao Yan marry and have a child. So Xiao Yan could only follow his father's arrangements and agree to a betrothal.
The person he was betrothed to was also a ge'er from the village, but Xiao Yan barely knew him and didn't care. Whoever he married, it was all the same. As long as his husband was a good person, his husband could manage the household while he earned money to support the family.
But not long after the betrothal was settled, that young ge'er came looking for him...
