Shu Ying always knew he was a sickly man who wouldn’t live to see forty.
And she married him for his body, with one foot already in the grave, and the huge fortune he’d leave behind when he died.
By the winter of their sixth year together, Shu Ying got her wish: she had indeed outlasted him.
He died at the age of thirty-nine.
According to his last wishes, the funeral was to be kept low-key, and she was to keep vigil alone for seven days.
Out of consideration for their six years as husband and wife, Shu Ying followed his instructions to the letter. She wore mourning clothes all day, her eyes red-rimmed.
-
On the seventh night of the vigil, the fog was thick and the wind gentle, but the full moon shone bright and clear, untouched by the mist.
Shu Ying was the only one keeping vigil in the mountain villa’s funeral hall. She didn’t believe in ghosts or gods, and even recited the sutras absentmindedly.
Just as she was about to leave, a draft swept through the hall. A chill seized her heart. She mistook the gaze from the depths of the room for an illusion and looked up
Only to see her husband, who had been dead for seven days, standing before her. His eyes lowered, he smiled at her and brushed her cheek. “You know that even in death, I would never leave you to fend for yourself.”
His hand was cold, but the touch was real.
Her scream tore through the mountains. He wrapped his arms tightly around her, and she couldn’t break free.
On the third day after she woke from her faint, he fed her congee spoonful by spoonful. Only then did Shu Ying finally accept that her dead husband had truly returned from the grave.
Later, her plan to run off with the money was exposed, and her escape failed.
Shu Ying knelt on the ground, sobbing softly as she begged him for mercy, her heart twisting with anxiety.
He showed no mercy. Gripping her wrist tightly, he gazed at her calmly and spoke in a low, measured voice:
“The fortune is yours. You won’t lose a single cent. But, darling...”
“You must stay by my side, even after death.”
