At first, we were only casual acquaintances. She was a big-name author, and I was a minor fan. I liked her, but the feeling wasn't mutual. In the year after we added each other on WeChat, we exchanged no more than ten messages. Nine were holiday greetings I'd sent to everyone, and the last was her “Mm.” Our lives should never have crossed, but the pandemic brought us together. I had barely stepped into her home when the neighborhood was sealed off. Panic-stricken, I stumbled inside and ended up staying with her. Two only children, both used to having everything their own way and never lifting a finger. We couldn't do a thing around the house and knew nothing about farming. Living without takeout, deliveries, or a cleaning lady sent us into a meltdown again and again. I planted my hands on my hips and yelled, “Didn't you write a food novel? How can you not even cook?” She chased me with a shiny spatula in hand. “Aren't all your protagonists domestic goddesses? How can you not even mop the floor?” Chaos everywhere, and more chaos after that. The swan who'd never cared about everyday life became a big white goose. The quiet, graceful forest sprite I used to be turned into a little weirdo. Most importantly, we both thought we were completely straight, and so did the other person. A short, sweet story.
