Handicraft blogger Jiang Ling woke up to find herself transmigrated into a novel as a village girl who shared her name.
Her parents were dead, leaving her with two younger siblings. Most importantly, all the family had left was one bowl of coarse rice and eight copper coins.
Jiang Ling went out with her eight copper coins to buy grain and unexpectedly learned there was a bamboo grove nearby. Her eyes lit up: this was just what she needed. Her old trade was calling!
Starting with bamboo and straw weaving, she made baskets, hampers, trays, fans, and bamboo mats. If you could imagine it, she could weave it. First she went from street to street hawking her wares, then she set up a little stall, rented a shop, and eventually opened one in the capital. With her own clever hands, she wove herself a wonderful life and uncovered the secret behind her father's early death.
The Pei family had served in the Ministry of Works for generations. Pei Zhao's grandfather had once been Minister of Works and hoped a descendant would carry on the family tradition. Unfortunately, one of his sons was obsessed with solving cases, while the other was obsessed with martial arts. Among the grandchildren, only the prim and proper Pei Zhao was good at his studies and seemed obedient, so his grandfather placed great hopes in him.
But he was hopeless with his hands!
A little scene: To avoid disappointing his grandfather, Pei Zhao slipped out on the day of his grandfather's fiftieth birthday, intending to buy him a gift.
His playful, spendthrift cousin insisted on coming along, so Pei Zhao had no choice but to bring his little tagalong. At Jiang Ling's newly opened shop, his cousin couldn't bear to put down any of the items. After buying his own gift, Pei Zhao remembered his aunt's instructions and solemnly advised him, "Don't let toys distract you from your proper duties."
Pei Zhao had always been stern and old-fashioned, and his cousin was terrified of him. He could only hang his head and choose one thing.
Much later, Pei Zhao visited Jiang Ling's shop in the capital every day, buying one item each time.
At the end of the month, when the books were being tallied, Pei Zhao came by again. Jiang Ling tilted her head and smiled. "Lord Pei, don't let toys distract you from your proper duties!"
The most upright and stern man in the Ministry of Works blushed from his face to the tips of his ears.
