Synopsis
[Childhood sweethearts / Mutual pining / Reunited after years apart]
Xu Yingshi joins a dating reality show for ordinary people to help a friend and avoid a matchmaking date.
She never expected to run into her childhood friend Wen Zhao, whom she hadn't spoken to in six years.
They were neighbors across the hall and grew up together. They had once been incredibly close, but had a huge fight just before graduating from university and never spoke again.
Now, reunited after all these years, their eyes meet.
In full view of everyone, Wen Zhao calmly holds out a hand. "Nice to meet you. I'm Wen Zhao."
Xu Yingshi: "..."
Great, so he wants to pretend he doesn't know her? Just you wait, buddy!
When they take turns cooking...
Xu Yingshi serves a table full of fiery Sichuan dishes and acts surprised. "Attorney Wen can't eat spicy food? I'm so sorry."
Wen Zhao says, "It's fine," while downing eight glasses of water.
The next day, he gets up early to buy groceries and politely returns the favor with a cilantro feast. "Director Xu, please."
In that moment, Xu Yingshi's face turns greener than the cilantro on the table.
During a casual chat among the guests, they discuss the personality traits they find hardest to accept in a partner.
Wen Zhao says calmly, "Immature, bad-tempered, and ruled by their emotions."
Xu Yingshi scoffs. "Cold, full of themselves, and bossy."
At that, Wen Zhao's composure falters a little.
Their gazes meet and dart away again, sparks invisible to everyone else crackling between them.
Xu Yingshi and Wen Zhao are so good at pretending that the other ordinary contestants think they're bitter enemies who can't stand each other.
That is, until a game leaves Xu Yingshi with the punishment of asking her pinned contact for money online. She grabs the wrong phone by mistake and unexpectedly sees Wen Zhao's messages.
There is only one pinned contact, with the nickname "Firefly."
When she opens the chat, every message is marked with a glaring red exclamation mark.
[Ah Ying, I've arrived in the United States]
[Now that I'm gone, are you being picky about food again? You'll definitely be eating while cursing me for being heartless and leaving you alone in England to eat awful food. I'll let you in on a secret: I've been learning to cook a lot of Chinese dishes in private. I planned to make them for you after we went abroad]
[It's been another month. I have to go to the hospital again today]
[It's February 14 again. I'm sorry I didn't show up for our date on Valentine's Day that year and hurt you]
[A confession: I sat for too long yesterday, and the symptoms came back a little. This morning I was stiff in bed for ten minutes before I could get up]
[Miss, happy birthday [carefully wrapped gift.jpg]]
[I saw the graduation photos Aunt Hang posted. Your hair's grown long, you've lost a little weight, and your makeup looks beautiful]
[Congratulations on graduating, my director]
[Ah Ying, I miss you so much]
That night, after they reunited, he sent her one more message.
[Xu Yingshi, long time no see]
