Above the Tundra

On Cheng Suiyi's eleventh birthday, her mother received an emergency call from the hospital late at night. She rushed there to take part in an operation, but died in a car accident on her way home.

A little over a month after the funeral, Cheng Suiyi's father brought home a little boy from outside.

He lowered his eyes, his eyelashes long and his skin pale. His slightly curled hair was a malnourished light brown, and he was so beautiful he looked like a doll.

He was a year older than Cheng Suiyi. The neighbors all said he was her father's illegitimate son.

Cheng Suiyi tried all sorts of ways to drive him out of the house.

In the eyes of outsiders, Song Jinnian was like a little dog Cheng Suiyi kept, never disobeying her.

Cheng Suiyi was about to tell him he had no shame, but out of the corner of her eye, she saw the sink behind him. Just moments ago, he had been washing her underwear for her.

She felt so mortified she wanted the ground to swallow her.

After graduating from high school, Cheng Suiyi went abroad to study and completely lost touch with Song Jinnian.

After returning home from college, she went on several blind dates, but every one ended in failure.

Her last blind date was with Song Jinnian.

Song Jinnian told her, "Cheng Suiyi, those men can't take care of you. I'm the only one who can."

Cheng Suiyi mocked him without mercy. "Do you think everyone is like you?"

"They're not like me. I can't live without you."

While sorting through things at her old home, Cheng Suiyi found a document.

She learned that Song Jinnian wasn't her father's illegitimate son. He was a patient her mother had once saved in the operating room.

In her diary, her mother had written that Cheng Suiyi was her only daughter, and she would spend her whole life loving her.

Below that sentence, Cheng Suiyi saw another line, written in Song Jinnian's handwriting.
