Summer and Fish

After her Nth fight and cold war with He Chenyu, Zhou Xia changed his contact name to “He Dog” and told her childhood friend that from now on, if she ever spoke to him again, she’d be a dog.

That night, while scrolling through Weibo, she saw a video someone had posted of their golden retriever puppy and commented:

[As a medical student, I can tell you with confidence: that puppy’s eyes are wandering all over the place. It clearly wants to come home with me.]

The next day, the WeChat profile picture for “He Dog” had become a golden retriever. A new message appeared in the chat where they’d last traded threats during their argument.

“Come downstairs.”

Zhou Xia ran downstairs. After staring at He Chenyu for a few seconds, she said stiffly, “What can I do for you, sir?”

He Chenyu looked down at her. “I heard you want a golden retriever.”

Zhou Xia’s expression turned complicated. Remembering his profile picture, she suddenly understood. “So you want to be my dog?”

He Chenyu, who had a golden retriever puppy tucked in his arms: “…”

“Why don’t you bark for me first?”

That night, their childhood friend saw the two of them gaming together and said, “If I ever believe you two again, I’m a dog. Speaking of dogs, He Dog, I heard you spent last night asking your entire Moments feed if anyone had a golden retriever puppy for sale?”

He Chenyu: “Get lost.”

Coming soon:

Chen Jianian, the talk of Tianlin No. 1 High School, gets great grades, is good-looking, comes from a wealthy family, and does whatever he wants.

Transfer student Xu Zhiwen is gentle and low-key, never competing for attention.

To everyone else, the two of them have nothing in common.

Chen Jianian thought so too, at first.

Then, during the school basketball tournament, Chen Jianian sank a deep three-pointer to win the game. In the gym, the boy in his bright red jersey was dazzling and full of fire. The crowd roared, while girls in the stands screamed his name with all their might.

At that moment, unassuming Xu Zhiwen quietly stepped forward and handed Chen Jianian a bottle of water in front of everyone.

-

Everyone at No. 1 High started saying Xu Zhiwen was pursuing Chen Jianian.

Later the rumors changed: Xu Zhiwen came from an ordinary family and was soft-spoken. Aside from her pretty face, she had nothing going for her. Chen Jianian would never be interested.

But then someone saw Chen Jianian corner Xu Zhiwen in a dim, cramped stairwell, leaving her nowhere to go.

Xu Zhiwen gazed at the boy before her, her eyes clear, and called him gently by name. “Chen Jianian.”

The boy, usually so carefree and arrogant, lowered his head in submission. His voice was low and hoarse. “Xu Zhiwen, don’t play with me.”

-

Everyone thought Xu Zhiwen was pursuing Chen Jianian.

But Chen Jianian just thought Xu Zhiwen was strange.

She handed him water but turned down his friend request.

She flirted with him but never accepted his invitations.

When he finally managed to add her, she took forever to reply, answering only once a week.

Did Chen Jianian really think she was trying to win him over?

She was obviously stringing him along.

Then, at graduation, Chen Jianian accidentally saw a letter of thanks Xu Zhiwen had written.

The handwriting was elegant and neat.

It began:

Professor Chen, thank you for supporting me all these years.
