Blurb:

A clever, beautiful, sweet-on-the-outside, scheming-on-the-inside heroine X a sly, dissolute young heir with two faces

Everyone in Yecheng knows Bai Chuanzhou as a dissolute young heir: he carries a birdcage around, plays with birds, wastes his days, and has no ambition to study. Yet he happens to be bound by an engagement to the Chu family, arranged by their elders.

Chu Yingge is the least favored adopted daughter, and so she is stuffed into the bridal sedan chair.

On their wedding night, they each sleep in separate rooms without a word. The golden lamps go out. Who would have thought that an hour later, they would both run into each other at a brothel filled with music and dancing?

They stared at each other.

Chu Yingge looked at him with a woman in each arm. "Coming to a brothel on your wedding night? Your dissolute ways are truly beyond my imagination, Young Lord."

Bai Chuanzhou looked at her in men's clothes. "Coming to a brothel on your wedding night? Your tastes are beyond my expectations too, Young Madam."

If word got out, the marquis's household would be disgraced, so they decided to cover for each other.

As they continued covering for each other, they grew closer and closer.

At some point, Chu Yingge noticed that Bai Chuanzhou had stopped visiting brothels and stopped playing with birds. Instead, whenever he had free time, he stayed home and followed her around.

Until one day, Bai Chuanzhou cornered her against a wall, his peach-blossom eyes fixed on her as he leaned in with a low laugh. "A Chu, how about you and big brother give it a try?"

Chu Yingge eyed him warily. "Give what a try...?"

Bai Chuanzhou whispered close to her ear, "Let's make the pretense real."

-

Chu Yingge was adopted. She lost her parents at the age of five, when they died in a massacre.

To investigate the truth, she grew up dependent on the Chu family. By a twist of fate, she married the dissolute young heir. She thought they could be a couple in name only, each keeping their distance, but the young heir only kept drawing closer.

He bought her the latest silks, gave her the finest jewels and hairpins, coaxed her, doted on her, stayed by her side, and protected her.

Their marriage in name only was about to become real in every way.

After the truth came to light, Chu Yingge resolutely left the marquis's household, but the young heir grabbed her pale wrist and said in a quiet voice, "You bit me, hurt me with a sword, touched me with your hand in the dead of night, and stole kisses from me..."

He ground out the words in her ear: "Have you had your fun and decided to abandon me now?"

Reader's Guide:

1. Both leads are each other's first and only love. One couple, sweet romance, love after marriage. The marriage is an engagement, and their romance begins as soon as they're engaged.

2. The young heir has a bit of a yandere streak. He seems dissolute on the outside, but is aloof underneath. Also known as "A Mutual Romance." Both leads have two sides.

2. They clash in the beginning, then fall for each other in the end.

Theme: Love must never be betrayed.
