After I Die

A preview of my upcoming novel, My Lover

CP: Dazai

Sakura always complains that I have terrible taste in men, or that I was simply born at the wrong time and never met the right person when it mattered most.

I once argued back with righteous indignation: I got my money's worth! Even though they're all in my past now, I can definitely claim 80% of the ex-girlfriend share among their exes.

Sakura: Still, you can't reunite with your ex-boyfriend now.

That's true, isn't it?

I tilted my head and looked over.

Straight ahead, a black-and-white photograph was surrounded by yellow and white roses. Smoke from the incense spiraled upward, veiling the face in the picture.

Kneeling before the memorial altar, Sakura's eyes were red from crying. She murmured, cursing, "You really are an idiot, a complete and utter idiot."

I tried to reach out and wipe away Sakura's tears, but the veined back of my hand passed right through her tear-streaked face.

Oh, right. I'd almost forgotten. A week had passed since my heart stopped beating. That pale, ugly corpse had become dust, laid to rest in a little urn.

I was dead.
