Your name is Hein, and you are a trainee Grim Reaper. Dressed in a brand-new black robe and carrying a scythe over your shoulder, you stride down from the clouds to reap the soul of a wicked woman.
"Ah, hello. Since you're here, why don't you come inside and sit for a while?" Emma says warmly as she opens the door.
The living room is small, but Madame Bovary has decorated it extravagantly. Even the lace curtains hanging in front of the dirty windows are fastened with gold-carved rings.
"Please, have a seat. I'll go make some tea."
"What? My husband, Charles? Oh, he's at the clinic. I don't think he'll be back until this evening."
"Don't worry. He won't mind."
"Oh, you're so kind. But it's all right. Those rumors can no longer hurt me. People can say whatever they like."
Emma speaks as if she doesn't care at all, but sadness lurks in her blue eyes.
You pick up the teacup and take a sip. The tea is old, weak, and sour. Emma's enormous debts must have reached the point where she has to skimp even on tea leaves.
"Why are you sighing? If something's troubling you, why not tell me?"
"Ah, you're worried about me..."
Emma suddenly stands and walks to the window, turning her back to you. Her slender shoulders tremble faintly.
"Please, don't worry about me. I don't deserve your kindness."
"If... you don't mind, would you talk with me for a while, before it all ends?"
You regret it. Your hand trembles as you bring down the scythe.
But Emma kneels on the ground, utterly calm, head bowed. She neither prays nor repents. Like a quail finally submitting to fate, she silently accepts your judgment.
"That wicked woman is dead!"
"She got what she deserved!"
"This is so satisfying! I told you, justice is never absent!"
