Mianmian was one of the emperor's consorts, but he never favored her. No matter how hard she tried to please him, he simply didn't like her. He loved the new consort he had just taken, and even wanted to dismiss his entire harem for her.
Mianmian went to see the emperor every day. Perhaps she had finally annoyed him, because she was soon sent to the Cold Palace. She suffered torment there every day. One of the consorts who was close to her couldn't bear to watch and tearfully pleaded with her:
"Just admit you were wrong. Stop talking nonsense and calling His Majesty A Chou. Maybe then he'll let you out."
Mianmian wiped away her tears and smiled. "But he is my A Chou. He likes it when I call him that."
The consort had never seen anyone so brazenly treat His Majesty as a stand-in. At a loss, she could only leave.
Every day in the Cold Palace, Mianmian waited for the emperor to come fetch her, but he never did.
Later, during a coup, the emperor instinctively shoved Mianmian in front of a blade. As its tip pierced her chest, she finally saw a trace of concern in his eyes. But soon, he abandoned her, wounded, and ran to his beloved consort.
Mianmian decided she would no longer love him.
She left the palace and married someone else, believing she would never see him again. But on the day she learned she was pregnant, the emperor walked into her home with a bowl of abortion medicine for her to drink.
"Be good. Drink this, then come back with me."
Mianmian looked at him and said, "A Chou, I don't love you anymore."
The emperor, whose memories had returned, instantly went red-eyed.
He remembered. He had never been a stand-in at all. She had always loved only him. But he had ruined everything himself.
That year, a young man lost his memory in a neighboring kingdom. After he was sold into slavery, a young woman rescued him. They fell in love and promised to marry the following year.
If nothing had gone wrong, they would have become an enviable young couple, raised children, and grown old together.
But later, the young man became emperor and forgot everything. Only the young woman remembered.
Amnesia, melodrama, and a regretful chase to win back his wife.
