Xiuxiu was an orphan, forced to marry a sickly man. He died before the wedding, and his family forced Xiuxiu into a coffin with his corpse and buried them together.

When Xiuxiu met Cui Daozhi, she had just crawled out of the coffin. Covered in blood, he tripped her with one foot.

One needed time to recover from his injuries; the other needed a bodyguard to help her get revenge. They hit it off and officially began sharing a life together.

Xiuxiu took Cui Daozhi home, bought him medicine, and cared for him day and night. Half a year passed, and she thought there was something between them. Then she rescued another young lady from a prominent family and brought her home.

Cui Daozhi clearly got along better with the young lady. Their education and family backgrounds were similar, and they always had plenty to talk about. Whenever they were together, Xiuxiu could only sit off to one side, quietly feeding the chickens.

She followed them to Chang’an and became Cui Daozhi’s maid. She watched him and the young lady play chess, sip tea, and play polo, while she could only serve them tea and water like a shadow hidden from the light. She even had to become Cui Daozhi’s concubine in all but name.

On the day they were to be formally betrothed, Xiuxiu quietly packed her things.

She didn’t like Chang’an. She wanted to go home.

Three-legged toads are hard to find, but there are plenty of two-legged men. After much soul-searching, Xiuxiu soon forgot Cui Daozhi and found herself a new fiancé.

On her wedding day, a light rain fell. Someone stopped the bridal sedan halfway along the road. Xiuxiu lifted her veil and saw Cui Daozhi glaring at her with gloomy eyes.

Before Xiuxiu could react, Cui Daozhi tossed her fiancé’s head at her feet.

“Sweet Xiuxiu, you really made me work to find you.”

Coming Soon ①: “Mianmian”

Mianmian is one of the emperor’s consorts, but he doesn’t favor her. No matter how hard she tries to please him, he simply doesn’t like her. He loves his newly appointed Noble Consort so much that he even wants to dismiss the entire harem for her.

Mianmian goes to see the emperor every day. Perhaps she annoys him, because before long she’s banished to the Cold Palace. She suffers torment there every day, and one of the consorts she’s close to can’t bear to watch. Through tears, she urges Mianmian:

“Just admit you were wrong. Stop talking nonsense and calling His Majesty Ah Chou. He might let you out if you do.”

Mianmian wipes her tears and smiles. “But he is my Ah Chou. He likes it when I call him that.”

The consort has never seen anyone so brazenly treat His Majesty as a stand-in for someone else. At a loss, she can only leave.

Every day in the Cold Palace, Mianmian waits for the emperor to come for her, but he never does.

Later, during a coup, the emperor instinctively shoves Mianmian in front of a blade. As it pierces her chest, she finally sees a flicker of concern in his eyes. But soon he leaves her injured and runs to his Noble Consort.

Mianmian decides she won’t love him anymore.

She leaves the palace and gets married, thinking she’ll never see him again. But on the day she learns she’s pregnant, the emperor walks into her home and gives her a bowl of abortion medicine.

“Be good. Drink it, then come back with me.”

Mianmian looks at him. “Ah Chou, I don’t love you anymore.”

The emperor, whose memories have returned, instantly turns red-eyed.

He remembers now. He was never a stand-in. She had only ever loved him. But he himself has already ruined everything.

That year, a young man lost his memory in a neighboring kingdom. After being sold as a slave, he was rescued by a young woman. They fell in love and promised to marry the following year.

If nothing had gone wrong, they would have become a happy young couple, raised children, and grown old together.

But later, the young man became emperor and forgot everything. Only the young woman remembered.

Coming Soon ②: “Jiaojiao”

Jiaojiao was born with rosy lips and pearly white teeth. She was brought to the palace as a child to play with the crown prince. Though nobody said so outright, everyone in the palace knew she was destined to become the future crown princess.

After a palace banquet one day, the crown prince’s side was bustling with activity, while the emperor’s quarters seemed rather deserted. Jiaojiao remembered the secret rumor circulating in the palace.

The current emperor had a hidden ailment: whenever a woman came near him, he suffered a terrible headache. As a result, he was nearly thirty and still had no consort in his harem to care for him. That was why he had adopted the crown prince, a member of the imperial clan, as his son.

A lonely man, all alone in the world.

So Jiaojiao often made clothes and shoes for the emperor to show her affection. Whenever she saw him, she tried to cheer him up with a few playful remarks. She knew he disliked women, so most of the time she would say only two or three things before leaving.

Until one day, while playing hide-and-seek with the crown prince, the emperor pulled her into hiding beneath his quilt.

The emperor sat up, lightly tapping Jiaojiao’s head through the bedding while the crown prince answered his questions. Curled up beneath the quilt, Jiaojiao didn’t dare move, doing everything she could to avoid touching the emperor.

After the crown prince left, the emperor lifted the quilt and gently wiped Jiaojiao’s forehead with a handkerchief. “Why are you sweating so much?”

Jiaojiao shuddered, hurriedly apologized, jumped off the bed, and ran away.

Not long afterward, the ministers submitted a memorial requesting that the crown prince marry. The emperor approved, but on his wedding night the crown prince discovered that his bride wasn’t Jiaojiao, but someone else. He was stunned.

What he didn’t know was that his beloved Jiaojiao was now curled up on the large yellow bed in Zichen Hall, crying her eyes out, while the emperor sat beside her, winding his sash around her ankle as he said:

“My sweet Jiaojiao, wouldn’t it be better if you liked me?”

Note: The heroine and the crown prince are childhood friends only. There is no romance between them.
