Hey, You've Got a Demonic Aura!

He Wenqin was a top student and the campus heartthrob at his law school, but after graduating, nothing went right in either his career or his personal life. After several twists and turns, he ended up at a small law firm as a criminal defense lawyer. His first case was assigned by the legal aid center: defend a defendant charged with intentional assault.

The defendant was a high school student under eighteen. He Wenqin made a flawless defense that won an acquittal, and thought his work was done. Little did he know the kid would cling to him.

Out of kindness, He Wenqin let Lu Li stay at his place, and found himself prematurely living the life of a parent worrying about a child's college entrance exams.

But lately, something strange had been happening. He kept running into a strangely dressed charlatan on the street where he lived. Today, the man had even declared to him, "Friend, you've got a demon aura about you!"

He Wenqin rolled his eyes inwardly. "Materialism is the truth. Superstition is nonsense."

From the corner, Lu Li watched him leave. One of his eyes turned a deep blue, and he tilted his head with a smile, showing two little fangs.

He Wenqin had thought that at this tiny law firm with its shabby sign, he'd be bored stiff. He never imagined that a bizarre murder case would plunge him into one major criminal case after another, leaving him convinced that his luck was doomed to keep going downhill.

And why did these cases always involve things that science couldn't explain? Even his colleagues seemed to grow stranger by the day.

He Wenqin realized he'd boarded a pirate ship. With his worldview turned upside down, he was somewhat glad he'd taken in the kid, Lu Li. Looking at how sweet and well-behaved Lu Li was, he couldn't help smiling like a doting father as he patted Lu Li on the head.

After having his head patted, Lu Li stood outside He Wenqin's room in the middle of the night, licked his paw's thick pads, and gazed greedily at He Wenqin's sleeping face.

Then Lu Li climbed into He Wenqin's bed and looked at him pitifully. "Big brother, I'm scared to sleep alone."

The next day, He Wenqin ran into the charlatan again for the first time in ages. The man cried out in alarm, "Friend, your demon aura is even stronger! Treasure your life. Don't share a bed with a demon!"

Reader's guide:

1. One-on-one, happy ending. All ages in the story are counted by East Asian age reckoning. The top is eighteen by that count when he first appears, one year short of adulthood; the receiver is twenty-three. There is no romance before the top comes of age.

2. Mystery-focused, set in a fictional modern world. Everything is made up; what the author says goes. The author's logic is dead.
