Ninety Thousand Miles in a Second

The Carefree Journey says: “The Kunpeng beats its wings and soars ninety thousand li into the sky.”

Journey to the West says: “The phoenix gave birth to a peacock and a great peng. The great peng was evil by nature, and in less than a year it devoured every ruler and citizen of the Lion Camel Kingdom.”

Yu Feiyao closes the book and smiles at the young man beside her. Her cheeks turn pink as she says shyly, “It's talking about me. I was born an immortal, a Golden-Winged Great Peng.”

The young man's pupils tremble. His voice is hoarse as he asks, “You eat people?”

Yu Feiyao nods earnestly. “Yes. Everything in the book is true.”

Of course, the young man doesn't believe her.

Until later, when he travels to the legendary Ten-Thousand-Li Demon Forest, wades through a pool of blood floating with human heads, and is brought before her by a demon general. He sees her with his own eyes, sitting in a chair made of human bones, gnawing on an arm. She lazily lifts her eyes and greets him: “Well, look at you, daring to come all this way to find me. You've got some nerve.”

The young man's face turns deathly pale. He cuts his robe with his sword, breaks all ties with her, and flees the demon forest covered in wounds as blood pours from the sky.

He will never know that this was the fate of a fallen immortal, nor that his departure came at the price of her guarding the Demon Realm for all eternity.

He has forgotten that in the three years Yu Feiyao was with him, she never touched anything bloody.

She lied to her.

Content warnings:

The female lead is not a virgin; the male lead is.

The female lead is a celestial deity, and the male lead is human.

The leads break up at the end and go their separate ways, but come to terms with it. No angst.
