When Yu An first heard it, she scoffed. Life was so long, and she was so full of love for the world. How could she ever fall for just one person?
Later, she got her comeuppance. At first, that person was the bright moon in her heart, who stayed with her through every hardship. Later, that person became the cinnabar mole she could never forget.
Then, by a twist of fate, the bright moon came down from her pedestal and struggled out of the mud alongside her. Yu An escaped the mire, but she was never destined to grow into a peony or a thorny rose. She grew into a bramble.
The bright moon touched her thorns and said, “Don't feel inferior. Your thorns are beautiful. Some people love peonies, some love roses, but I love brambles most, because everyone has their own taste.”
Only in the end did she learn that she, too, had once been the bright moon's first love.
