"Disaster is always one step behind me.
Fear me.
My judgment is superior to yours."
Huan Meng is a popular competitor in heavy mech combat.
Mysterious, with an unknown past, and always managing to escape impossible situations, she is hailed by the public as a rising star of the sport.
The most valuable combat pilot lives in the cheapest neighborhood in District 36. Her dream is to become the heavy mech combat champion of New District 1 and reclaim something that belonged to her father.
Her rented apartment is a one-person unit illegally divided into two. The sublandlord is a kind young woman who took her in to share the rent.
One day, Huan Meng finishes work and crosses the entire district to return to her remote little apartment.
As she counts the massive debt that will take her longer to pay off than the galaxy has left to exist, she returns home and is shocked to discover that her landlady and roommate have run off.
Rent is due in a week, and Huan Meng's account is empty.
Just before she has to sleep on the street, a new tenant finally shows up.
The man looks at the illegally partitioned apartment. "...Won't this get you fined?"
She asks, "Can you afford a place of your own?"
He takes out his money. "...How much is it per month to share?"
A few days later, Huan Meng sees her new roommate's face on a wanted poster projected on the street.
