[The Four Great Constables] Return to Where You Came From

[Come, let us go home. The willows stand ragged and sparse, as twilight rain is forecast.]

When she opened her eyes again, a thousand years had passed. Liu Qulai had never imagined she would still be alive in this world.

Come, let us go home. Come, let us go home. The road ahead cannot be explored, and the past cannot be reclaimed. Since he had once risked his life to save hers, she would give him her heart.

She was no immortal, no bewitching ghost. She was the indifferent ordinariness of the crowd, a hint of green beneath rain-soaked mountains. She was a thread of smoke beneath the candlelight by the western window, the scent of rouge trailing from the hem of a dress at an old market stall. She was a little thorn on a crabapple blossom, a faded patch in a decaying dream. She was the gaze of someone in the crowd behind him.

She was one among countless others, insignificant, a fleeting brush of shoulders.

"Cui Lueshang, you have such beautiful eyes."

[On a night long past, a thousand years before this one, we met amid the dust and turmoil.]
