The Emperor and Empress spent their whole lives detesting each other. In the end, they died of old age and arrived in the underworld, only to be denied permission to reincarnate. Their sins from their previous two lives were too great, they were told, so they would have to wait a few hundred years.
The Emperor and Empress jumped to their feet and shouted that it was unfair. The Judge dragged them over to the Stone of Three Lives. They took one look and fell silent.
In their first life, they were both their original selves. Though they shared a bed but not a heart, they were at least a normal married couple.
But by their second life, things started to go very wrong. Someone had transmigrated into the Empress's body. The young woman was full of romantic fantasies, and to save the young Emperor after the Empress Dowager poisoned him, she knelt before Buddha and swore an oath: "Buddha above, I am willing to give up all the blessings of my next life if you will let my beloved Xun recover. From now on, may we be a loving couple and grow old together."
But the damn Emperor was his original self. His heart belonged only to his empire, and he even thought his Empress might be insane. He passed by the harem three times without entering, then abandoned his wife and led the army into battle, where he died on the battlefield. He was utterly heartless.
By their third life, the original Empress had returned, but the damn Emperor had been transmigrated into. The transmigrator was a truly incompetent ruler, with no ability to govern at all, relying entirely on the Empress to rule from behind the curtain. Yet he was completely taken in by her acting. Before he breathed his last, he held her hand and coughed blood into the wind. "Xin'er, don't grieve for me. Every tear you shed breaks my heart. As long as you think of me in this palace when night falls, I will protect you, even from the heavens."
Then, as soon as the mourning period ended, the Empress began keeping handsome men.
And so the key to the problem was found, and the wrongs of their past lives were set right.
But the Emperor and Empress looked at each other with sickly expressions, each with the same thought in their eyes: "You were so cold-hearted toward your transmigrated friend!"
Only the Judge remained unmoved. With his backside sticking up in the air, he replied, "You can't blame me for this. Transmigration isn't handled by our department. If you want justice, you can file a report with the higher-ups. I'll send you to see those two in their present lives. If they can fulfill their old wishes there, you'll be able to reincarnate without a hitch when you come back."
So the next day, the Judge dumped the Empress, dressed in white with her black hair flowing, onto a busy street. She rubbed her arm and looked around in wonder. "Your Majesty, the buildings here are so tall. Those four-wheeled things look even faster than our Great Yong's Red Flame. And people don't even need horses to get around."
The Emperor had also been dumped there by the Judge's rough-handed enforcement. He glanced up at her, much calmer. "My Empress, if you don't get off me soon, the people might think you're riding me around."
The main setting of the story is modern times.
The short-lived Emperor, whose heart belonged only to his empire in his previous life, x the unfortunate Empress, whose acting was superb in her previous life.
They help each other and work hard to earn a chance at reincarnation.
They may seem to think, "How could I love a fiend who transmigrated into a book? Once all the glamor fades, you're still the one by my side." But really, it's just, "Let's make the best of it. What else can we do?"
