His White Rose

When Shen Chi'an met Cheng You, Cheng was an aimless delinquent.

His hair was dyed an outrageously flashy blond. He had a cigarette between his lips and wore a pair of loose, ripped jeans. Putting on a show of maturity, he stood at Shen's door and blew a smoke ring at him. "Lawyer Shen, pay me protection money and I'll look after you from now on."

Shen Chi'an chuckled, thinking he was just a kid who hadn't grown up yet.

He reached out, ruffled Cheng's hair, and said gently, "Dye it back."

The boy scoffed, but the next time they met, his hair really was black again.

Everyone said that back then, Cheng You was like a rabid dog, bound to become a menace to society, a good-for-nothing scumbag.

But what they didn't know was that, night after night, in a cramped, dim room, the boy sat hunched over his desk, slowly catching up on all the schoolwork he had fallen behind on.

The battered desk was covered with the same words, written again and again: I want him to see my acceptance letter. I want to get closer to him.

But when he finally held the same kind of acceptance letter Shen Chi'an had once received and went to find him, he discovered that Shen Chi'an had left without a word.

Ten years later, Cheng You had his own law firm.

As a successful professional, he received an invitation to give a speech at his alma mater.

He glanced at the audience and saw the person he had been looking for for ten years.

He used every connection he had to find out what had become of him.

Then, just as he had ten years ago, he lit a cigarette and leaned against the man's door, waiting for him to come home.

Footsteps came from the elevator. Cheng You looked up, but before he could speak, he saw the usually gentle, elegant man suddenly turn red-eyed.

Just as he had ten years ago, the man called him by that familiar nickname: "You little punk. You're here."
