[Main story complete]
[Next novel in the same genre: Tonight, I Shall Not Sleep. Please add it to your reading list!]
Luo Qianyu transmigrates into a novel full of people who adore its protagonist, becoming the infamous young marquis in the story.
Too bad he isn't the protagonist.
The adored protagonist is named Wen Yu, the capital's celebrated beauty. The prime minister covets him, the general admires him, and even the emperor wants to possess him.
But the arrogant, overbearing young marquis doesn't even make the top three among the love interests. He drugs the protagonist, yet doesn't even get a taste of the main course. The beauty loathes him, and another suitor knocks him down with a single punch and cripples his legs. From then on, his talent and pride are gone without a trace.
Luo Qianyu quietly closes the book. He doesn't have to get on board with this beauty's express train to passion.
The young marquis decides to fake his death and run away.
First, though, he needs to strengthen this frail body! At the very least, he can't let another love interest cripple him with two fingers. That would be humiliating.
And so the haughty young master of the marquis's estate suddenly changes his ways.
He forbids anyone from calling him beautiful, stops riding horseback through the night markets, and distances himself from the emperor, whom he grew up with. There are even rumors that someone saw the young marquis pull out books of poetry and scholarship at a pleasure house, leaving everyone stunned.
Gradually, people notice that the frail young marquis's figure is growing taller and straighter.
His skin is still pale, though, and he's still so beautiful it's hard to look away.
1.
At the martial arts tournament, officials from both the civil and military ranks gather. Then a handsome rider in bright clothes gallops into the arena and comes to a stop.
The young marquis, whose skill with a bow had been little known, has skin as white as snow and a dashing bearing. He raises his bow and hits the bull's-eye with a single arrow.
In the end, he takes first place.
Under the gaze of the crowd, the young marquis lazily arches a brow and tosses the grand prize to his own guard, a smile in his peach-blossom eyes.
The emperor lowers his eyes, fingers tightening around his cup. He takes a sip of wine, secretly suppressing the surging tide of desire in his gaze.
2.
The capital's number one beauty enters the marquis's estate and becomes the young marquis's personal guard.
Life is peaceful until one late night, when the young marquis suddenly knocks on his door. The next moment, something is pressed into Wen Yu's hand.
“...This ointment is cool and smooth, and it relieves pain and bruising.” The young marquis leans close to his ear. “I often apply it to my palms when I practice swordplay. It works very well.”
“Keep it with you, and remember to carry it every day.” His gaze is tender as he clears his throat. “So that one day... you won't be able to get out of bed.”
Wen Yu looks at the ointment, then at the young master's profile lit by the candlelight. He says nothing. After a long while, he puts the jar away in his bag.
3.
Wen Yu knows the young marquis has designs on him. The aphrodisiac is hidden in his sleeve, ready to be used when Wen Yu lets down his guard.
Wen Yu remains wary, vigilant as a fox. But he waits and waits. The young marquis studies, practices archery, and grows into his strength, yet never makes a move on him.
Not until the young marquis repels an invading enemy and dies on the battlefield, leaving behind only a shriveled corpse.
*
They meet again at an inn in Xizhao.
The young marquis is dressed in foreign clothes, with two beauties behind pearl curtains keeping him company over drinks.
When Wen Yu sits across from him, everyone else in the inn has already left. The place is deserted.
The protagonist, now the pursuer, takes a familiar-looking jar of ointment from his robes and sets it on the table.
Under the young marquis's astonished gaze, Wen Yu swallows the aphrodisiac that had been prepared for him. “Does it take the time it takes an incense stick to work?”
The young marquis's Adam's apple moves. Not understanding, he nods.
“Can't you run fast?”
The protagonist's voice is icy. “You can still run now.”
■※※The original novel's pursued character becomes the pursuer. Wen Yu is the pursuer!※※
■Cool, devoted, fatherly beauty pursuer x proud, pampered transmigrator
■Fake death and identity reveal; fictional dynasty setting, ensemble cast elements. Readers who value historical accuracy, beware.
■The pursuer's adored-by-everyone trait will transfer to the protagonist.
■Before reading, please temper your expectations. Don't blindly buy the whole book; subscribe according to your tastes. Whether a story starts weak and gets better is highly subjective, and everyone has different tastes. Don't blindly buy the whole book based on other people's claims that it gets better. I'm begging you, bang, bang, bang, orz.
Next novel in the same genre: Tonight, I Shall Not Sleep
Blurb:
The Unofficial History of the Sheng Dynasty records the story of how the dynasty's most beautiful man and an ambitious young marquis met and fell in love, then joined forces to overthrow a tyrant.
Ye Chishu opens his eyes and finds himself transmigrated into the body of that tyrant.
...His situation is extremely difficult.
The protagonist is a beauty adored by many, the top candidate in this year's imperial examinations, talented in both literature and martial arts, and the fortune-tellers of the city have predicted he will be Great Sheng's lucky star.
The love interest is the son of a battle-hardened marquis, a future ruler of a new dynasty who will usurp the throne and wield immense power.
One move could affect the whole board.
Neither man can be touched.
Ye Chishu sets down the memorial and smiles softly.
As a tyrant, he is feared by all. Is there anyone in this world he can't touch?
At the morning court, the tyrant sits on the dragon throne with his chin propped on one hand. His face is hard to make out as he coolly speaks two sentences, deciding the fates of the protagonist and his love interest.
“Sheng Xiyu, top candidate in this year's imperial examinations, I appoint you as a brocade-clad guard and court recorder.”
(The adored protagonist stays by his side.)
“Lin Jun, son of the Marquis of Lin, I am sending you to garrison the border against unrest in the Western Regions. You will depart in three months.”
(The unruly, ungrateful hound is sent away from home.)
The protagonist and his love interest, who once loved each other to the point of death,
now find it almost impossible even to meet.
2.
To make sure the lovers stay apart, Ye Chishu relies on his memories and secretly summons the other suitors of the beautiful character in the book.
He listens to each of them confide their feelings, gives them a little encouragement, and even teaches them a few tricks from the unofficial history about how the regent won the beauty's heart.
Prince Love Interest 1: I gave the top candidate a jade pendant to wear close to his body, but he didn't even look at it before tossing it on the ground.
The emperor ponders briefly. “Tokens of love like that are outdated. I have a Ferghana horse. Give it to him. He'll treasure an imperial gift.”
The prince: I am a fool. Thank you for your guidance, Your Majesty!
Prime Minister Love Interest 2: Truthfully, I've long admired him. Unfortunately, I've never had the chance to talk to him, and he has paid me even less attention since entering the palace.
The emperor sighs softly. “That's how long-distance relationships are. I grant you permission to come to the palace more often, talk by candlelight, and discuss state affairs.”
The prime minister: I shall devote myself wholeheartedly to my duties. I am deeply grateful!
General Love Interest 3: I will accompany the marquis on campaign. My thoughts are with Sheng Xiyu, and I can't stop worrying that some ill-intentioned person will take advantage of my absence.
The emperor pats his shoulder. “You needn't worry, my dear subject. If you return safely, I promise to arrange a marriage between you and the top candidate.”
The general: I will fight bravely and return victorious!
The many rival suitors: [We never realized His Majesty was... such a good person.]
The news reaches the marquis's estate outside the palace.
The young man who will one day become emperor slowly tightens his grip on the jade pendant the emperor had casually sent over with a eunuch as a gift. Turbulent emotions stir in his eyes.
*
When the three-month deadline arrives,
the city gates are packed with people. The townsfolk crane their necks to watch and bid farewell to the valiant son of the marquis as he departs for war.
But for some reason, the hero bound for the distant frontier turns out to be the beautiful top candidate instead!
3.
One year later.
The capital's most beautiful man, the renowned hero who quelled the unrest and conquered the Western Regions, breaks into His Majesty's hot spring late at night.
Under the dark, windy sky, he pulls down his black face covering. His gaze is as cold as frost, captivating all who meet it. “Your Majesty, I heard you planned to arrange a marriage for me.”
“I returned from the western campaign. Why have you been avoiding me?”
The young marquis, who should have been plotting to seize power and usurp the throne, is now wearing the uniform of a brocade-clad guard. He blocks the soaked emperor from view, leaving not an inch of him exposed.
He draws his sword, a smile that doesn't reach his eyes. “Sheng Xiyu, breaking into His Majesty's bedchamber in the dead of night. Are you trying to rebel?”
Ye Chishu ignores them, puts on his robe, and heads straight back to his chambers to sleep.
Behind him, a scorching gaze follows the water as it trickles from his hair and soaks the hem of his robe, lingering over his undried calves.
Tonight's scene is the protagonists reuniting after a long separation, locked in a love-hate struggle.
Everything is going according to plan.
So why does something feel inexplicably wrong?
Tonight, I Shall Not Sleep.

Next modern novel: The Physicist Who Married an Esports Player
Blurb:
The protagonist is a promising young physicist. His dream is to win a Nobel Prize and then find a suitable partner.
As it happens, the country introduces a new policy: citizens can use their ID cards to enroll in the national matching system and marry their assigned match. (In short, the state assigns you a partner.)
The protagonist signs up full of confidence.
His match is sure to love physics as much as he does... Chemistry would be acceptable too.
Three days later.
When he learns that his 100% compatible match is a man, and also an esports player, the protagonist feels as if the sky has fallen.
Setting aside the fact that he's a man, this is the least serious profession in the protagonist's eyes.
A 100% compatibility rating is what the public calls a soulmate match.
Following the address, the protagonist decides to visit the love interest's club and talk things over.
Lights flash backstage at the arena. While waiting for the match to end, he looks around for a chance to speak. But when he turns around, he bumps into the other man's arms. The man is wearing a black hoodie, tall and looking down at him.
He hears the players around them call the man “Captain.”
Under the man's unfamiliar, frigid aura, he suppresses his nerves and looks up. “Hello. Could you sign this divorce consent form?”
“I heard that if both parties are unhappy, the state can approve a divorce on a case-by-case basis. The waiting period is only six months.”
As the protagonist explains in earnest, his eyelashes tremble. The man unexpectedly pulls his own hat down over the protagonist's head.
The weight on his head makes his vision suddenly darken. The protagonist is speechless.
Then, to his surprise, the pro player's voice is cool and distant. “Sorry.”
“I'm not unhappy.”
*
The state releases a new announcement! The system has been updated, and newlyweds will soon be able to check the reasons for their match through the system.
Unable to understand why, the protagonist is the first to visit the civil affairs bureau and ask. He gets this response:
1. Childhood friends. 2. 100% sexual compatibility. 3. Mutual admiration for each other's professions...
This is ridiculous.
Unconvinced, the protagonist skips a lecture by a visiting foreign professor that day and heads to an esports tournament to watch the love interest's latest match.
After a thrilling match, the third reason is confirmed.
Once he comes back to his senses, head spinning and neck flushed, the protagonist locks up the lab, goes home, and is backed against the wall by his assigned partner that night, kissed until he trembles.
He doesn't get out of bed for the rest of the night.
The second reason is confirmed too.
Protagonist: “...”
Fine. Only the first reason is left.
Are he and the partner assigned by the state childhood friends?
...That is absolutely impossible.
*
Lock is a terrifying demon king in the esports scene, and his career has gone smoothly from the start.
Not only is his skill top-notch, he also made a name for himself as a rookie, founded the dark horse team Teen, and carved a path through the competition like a god of death. In games and on the tournament circuit alike, he's created countless unforgettable legends.
In the end, he even married his childhood sweetheart, with whom he'd fallen in love at first sight.
When Team Teen first meets the highly intelligent, cool-headed theoretical physics PhD, who's beautiful as a painting, they watch him turn red in the ears as the players all call him “Sister-in-law.” The team members are green with envy.
Until one day, the love interest picks up his partner from the lab and notices a countdown in the bottom-right corner of the small blackboard used for working out physics equations:
[Only 42 days left until the divorce waiting period ends.]
Scheming esports ace pursuer x beautiful physicist pursued
*Marriage first, love later; one-on-one; childhood friends; happy ending
*Reunion after a long separation, a little sweet treat.
