Burning Hues

At first, Li Fuzhou just thought Jiang Ying was too good to him.

So good that it was almost excessive, so good he felt she must have owed him a debt in a past life.

He reluctantly agreed to be with her.

It wasn't as if he had anything to lose. If she wanted to give, he would accept.

She was always so careful around him.

When he lost his temper, she apologized.

When he gave her the silent treatment, she waited.

He said so many hurtful things, but she never left.

He thought she couldn't live without him.

At some point, he began to look at her small figure crouched in their rented apartment, cooking noodles for him, and suddenly felt a little sorry for her.

She was working far from home, with no family or friends, clinging to him as if he were her only lifeline.

He began worrying about her without even realizing it: whether she had eaten, whether she was warm enough, whether she could afford the rent.

He felt like a nagging housekeeper, managing everything inside and out.

He even started planning for the future.

Where they would buy a home, when they would get married, helping her earn a diploma, what age they would have children...

He thought, She has nothing. I have to make plans for her.

He didn't think it was love.

He just felt sorry for her.

Then, many years later, he saw her again on the giant screen outside a supermarket.

Only then did he suddenly understand:

Jiang Ying wasn't the one to be pitied.

He was.
