The Fortunate Child Bride

Su Mingxiu was pretty and capable. Farming, housework, embroidery... there was nothing she couldn't do. Unfortunately, she had a stepmother who was nothing but trouble.

When Su Mingxiu was twelve, her father, Su Dayan, sold her to Xu, a widow from the neighboring village famed for her harshness. She was to bring good luck to Xu's gravely ill son, Wei Xunting, by marrying him. Wei Xunting was bright and clever even as a boy, and had passed the Tongsheng examination at a young age. Sadly, he was frail and did not seem long for this world.

Her stepmother, Wang Lianhua, waited to see her suffer: once Wei Xunting died, Xu the widow would torment Su Mingxiu all she liked. But no matter how long Wang waited, nothing happened.

As Wei Xunting's health steadily improved and the sharp-tongued but soft-hearted Xu protected Su Mingxiu from every harm, Wang Lianhua's heart bled with envy.

As Wei Xunting worked his way through the imperial examinations, Su Mingxiu's title kept changing: Miss Su, Scholar's Wife, Provincial Graduate's Wife, County Magistrate's Wife, First-Rank Noblewoman...

Everyone for miles around praised her: “That Mingxiu girl really brings her husband good fortune!”
