I Became the River God

"What do you wish for?"

"I want to live."

As Yu Luo lay dying after drowning while trying to save someone who had jumped into a river, he heard someone ask him that question.

He answered, and then he was given a new life.

The new world was very strange.

People in this world could transform into bizarre shapes at any moment. Growing two heads and four arms was nothing unusual. Once they turned into monsters, they no longer recognized their friends and family, and would bite anyone they saw.

But even then, instead of taking people to hospitals or research institutes, everyone prayed to the gods.

Don't you think there's something wrong with them?

"When mutation descended upon the world, people had nowhere to flee. So in the end, they raised the monsters to the divine throne, bowed down to them and cheered them on, watching as they fought to the death against other monsters."

"In the history books of later generations, we call it a blood-soaked and glorious war."

Yu Luo was unfortunate enough to become one of the unlucky souls put on a pedestal. Ever since, all he wanted was to abdicate, but he couldn't... Those people were offering him far too much.

Many years later, Yu Luo sat high above, enjoying the worship of the masses.

He tried to hold back, but finally couldn't stop himself from kicking the person beside him off the platform.

"I wanted to abdicate and stop being the River God, not become your divine consort!"

An alternate world with Lovecraftian elements and a post-apocalyptic future.
