The first time Lu Chu met Liang Jing face-to-face, he was a pale, thin fifteen-year-old boy.
Sitting in a wheelchair, he looked at her with cold detachment. His eyes, once as clear and bright as stars, had grown dim and lifeless.
Lu Chu stood at the hospital room door and spoke gently to him. “Xiao Jing, I'm here to take you home.”
When Liang Jing was fifteen, he lost his family in a car accident.
His older sister's best friend came to the hospital and said she wanted to take him home.
“I don't have a home,” he said indifferently, his personality changed beyond recognition.
But Lu Chu replied softly, “Xiao Jing, as long as you're willing, my home will be your home from now on.”
Years later, a boy much taller than Lu Chu blocked the bedroom doorway and wouldn't let her escape.
He lowered his head, his eyes lowered, and asked seriously, speaking slowly, “If I'm willing, can I have you too?”

1. Seven years later, when they meet again, Li Zhi is Gu Jingchen's private secretary.
The senior she'd been inseparable from in high school now stood before her in a sharp suit. He watched her with a cool, unfamiliar gaze and asked, “Name?”
To ease the tension between them, Li Zhi put a box of his favorite lychees on his desk every morning.
Each one was fresh, round, and translucent, peeled by her own hand. In the past, this was how she always coaxed him back into a good mood.
This time, however, Gu Jingchen remained unmoved by her overtures. He set the lychees aside and said casually, “What, trying to seduce me?”
Afraid that bringing him more would give him the wrong idea, Li Zhi showed up at work empty-handed the next day.
Instead, Gu Jingchen cornered her in his office and demanded irritably, “Where are the lychees?”
Li Zhi looked confused. “I'm right here.”
Gu Jingchen paused, then pressed his tongue against his teeth and gave a mocking laugh. “You're giving me yourself today?”

2. When Li Zhi was seventeen, she transferred to the high school Gu Jingchen attended.
Before the school year began, their families gathered for dinner, and Li Zhi met the unruly Gu Jingchen for the first time.
She sweetly called him “Second Brother Gu,” only to be met with a derisive snort.
Their parents told Gu Jingchen to take good care of the gentle Li Zhi at school. He agreed carelessly.
No one saw what happened when the two of them were left alone in the living room that day.
Gu Jingchen threatened her with a nasty smile. “Don't think I'll protect you just because you call me big brother.”
After school started, Gu Jingchen was the only person in the whole school who gave Li Zhi a hard time every day.
Li Zhi was wary and afraid of him, and avoided him whenever she could.
Then one day, Gu Jingchen deliberately cornered her in a secluded spot.
Watching her look so panicked she was about to cry, he licked the corner of his lips, his mouth dry, and coaxed her in a low voice: “Call me Second Brother, and I'll let you go.”
[Bonus scene:]
On the night Gu Jingchen got drunk, he grumbled at Li Zhi as she peeled lychees for him. “You think I give a damn about the lychees you peel?”
Li Zhi explained earnestly in a soft voice, “Back in school, my classmates all said you liked lychees...”
Gu Jingchen was so exasperated that the words burst out of him all at once. “They were talking about you! You're the one I give a damn about!”
