Listening to the Evening Breeze with You

Every time Jiang Hezhou’s mom runs into Jiang Tingwan on the street, she comes home wishing she could snap the backbone of her own little troublemaker.

Just look at other people’s kids: pretty, sweet, sensible, and generous. The more she looks, the more she likes her. Then she looks at the menace in her own house: lazy, always causing trouble, and irritating as hell.

Whenever this happens, Jiang Hezhou just raises an eyebrow, calm and unconcerned.

Years later, Mom Jiang comes home from grocery shopping and catches her son kissing a girl he has wrapped in his arms in the stairwell.

The girl’s earlobes are red, and her profile is exquisite. She looks so familiar that the groceries fall right out of Mom Jiang’s hands.

Hearing the noise, Jiang Hezhou tucks the girl’s head against his chest and gives a faint smile.

“Someone else’s kid is mine now. She’s one of ours.”

Master He’s words of wisdom: If you can’t become someone else’s kid, bring that kid back to your own nest.
