The cold wind swept yellow sand against the doors and windows, howling as it went. The sky was gloomy. I was crouching in the courtyard, watching Da Wu make a kite for me, while Xiao Wu teased the canary I kept. The whole courtyard was full of lively commotion.

The steward hurried in, his expression grave. Bowing to Father, he reported, "General, the orphan of General Xie has been brought to the entrance of the residence."

The teacup in Father's hand paused slightly. A trace of regret showed on his usually stern face.

I looked at Mother. "Is he also a husband Father has chosen for me?"
