Life in the Railway Compound in the 1970s

Overworked office drone Jian Yunkai drops dead in her rented room. When she opens her eyes, she has traveled back to the 1970s and become the little girl next door to her mother, Zhang Shufen.

Jian Yunkai clutches her mother's hand, tears in her eyes. "I was born in such a great era! Retirement is just around the corner!"

Jian Yunkai slipped and fell into the river, and only just got pulled out. The adults nearby all said the girl must have water in her head. What ten-year-old talks about retirement?

Zhang Shufen gently tapped Jian Yunkai on the cheek. "Do you know who I am?"

"You're my mom."

Zhang Shufen: "...She really does have water in her head."

Jian Yunkai is still thrilled, already planning how in a few years she'll take the college entrance exams, graduate, get assigned a job, work for thirty years, and retire with a pension, free to enjoy life all over the world.

Zhang Shufen carries Jian Yunkai home. When Jian Yunkai sees the familiar gate of the railway workers' residential compound, she gets even happier. What a great work unit.

"Shufen, we have to study hard."

"Mm."

"Shufen, we have to work hard when we're older."

"Mm."

"Shufen, what do you want to do when you retire?"

"Shut up!"

Jian Yunkai giggles. Her mom was this way when she was young. That's great.
