Dai Xingyue had always secretly loved Xu Mingshen, the man who lived next door.
He was born with an air of aristocratic aloofness, and looked striking in his police uniform.
Then his grandmother fell gravely ill. Her one last wish was to see him marry Dai Xingyue with her own eyes. So he came to her with a marriage-of-convenience proposal: one year, one million yuan and an apartment, with no interference in each other's lives.
Dai Xingyue agreed without a second thought.
Being his wife for a year would be enough for her.
Not long after they registered their marriage, his grandmother passed away.
Xu Mingshen bought her an apartment near her workplace, but he never once visited.
He took the agreement's promise not to interfere in each other's lives to the extreme.
The night before their divorce, his message arrived right on time: "Let's take care of the paperwork tomorrow." At the time, she was on a high-speed train returning from a business trip.
When she got home, she discovered that someone had broken in. She immediately called the police.
Twenty minutes later, the police arrived. The officer was Xu Mingshen.
Dai Xingyue's eyes reddened in an instant. Pointing at the soggy scraps of paper on the floor, she said in a hoarse, trembling voice, "Officer, my husband's and my marriage certificate... The thief tore it up and soaked it in water."
Xu Mingshen: "..."
Wiping away her tears, she continued, "My husband said we were getting divorced tomorrow. What are we supposed to do now that the certificate's been ruined?"
Xu Mingshen glanced down at the obvious "evidence of a crime": the certificate had been torn up by hand and soaked in water. His Adam's apple shifted, and he replied coolly, "Get a replacement, then get divorced."
Dai Xingyue: "..."
She choked on her words, thinking, Divorce, divorce, divorce. Are you really that eager to leave me? Not a chance.

Later, on a weekend, he wrapped her in his arms and rested his chin in the hollow of her shoulder. His voice held a lazy smile. "Did the thief really tear up the marriage certificate?"
She stared at the TV and guiltily switched channels. "Of course."
He leaned close to her ear, his breath hot, his tone indulgent. "The thief confessed. He only stole the big gold bangle. I'm pretty sure you tore up the certificate yourself."
Her hand stopped. At last, unable to hold it in, she gave a couple of awkward laughs. "You knew all along?"
He smiled without answering and pulled her even closer.
