My Embroidery Is Worth Your [Intangible Cultural Heritage]

Suzhou embroidery.

A delicate-fingered girl who takes the lead, and a boisterous, somewhat straight-laced guy who follows.

Synopsis:

Su Henyu got his name because his father once entered an embroidery contest and narrowly missed first place after failing to embroider the feathers of a bird properly.

When his child was born that year, he chose the name "Henyu," meaning "regretful feather."

Later, when Su Henyu grew up, feathers were still the thing he embroidered worst. He always felt they lacked a certain liveliness.

Later, Su Henyu followed his relatives to Beijing to make a living and rented a room in a narrow alley in Liulichang. Right next door was an old bookshop, where Bai Xiaobai, the young owner of the White Bookshop, would climb over the wall to sneak a look at him embroidering in the courtyard.

Su Henyu was so annoyed that he went inside. To his surprise, Bai Xiaobai showed up at his door. Sometimes he brought a bun, sometimes a peach. He'd praise Su Henyu's handsome, refined looks, or his slender fingers and pink knuckles, saying he even looked beautiful holding an embroidery needle.

Su Henyu felt indebted to him, so he asked, "How about I embroider something for you? That can make up for all your kindness lately, and then you won't have to keep coming around."

Sitting on Su Henyu's bed and swinging his legs, Bai Xiaobai said, "Then embroider me a bellyband."

Su Henyu was so mortified that he snapped his embroidery needle in anger.

Who would have thought that he would eventually finish the bellyband and put it on Bai Xiaobai himself?

The day Bai Xiaobai wore it, Su Henyu brought out a red bridal veil he'd embroidered long ago and draped it over Bai Xiaobai's head.

Bai Xiaobai was still clueless. "Huh? You sewed so much for me? How much is all this going to cost?"

Su Henyu gritted his teeth and said, "My embroidery's price is you."
