Supporting a star: A term from Peking opera, also known as showing support. It refers to raising the status of a particular Peking opera performer or troupe by buying up tickets, cheering enthusiastically, writing glowing articles, and other such means.
A proud and solitary leading dan actor who dares to stand alone x a favored son of heaven who always gets what he wants.
Synopsis:
The first time Lan Qiuchi met Fu Chengge, Fu Chengge slapped him hard across the face.
At the entrance to the men's restroom in the theater, Lan Qiuchi was just pushing the door open when the slap landed without warning.
He was due on stage half an hour later. Luckily, his heavy stage makeup concealed the five-fingered mark swelling on his face. A noble consort onstage, a mess backstage.
After the performance, Fu Chengge sent an assistant to offer him an extravagant gift, hoping to make a connection with the opera world.
Lan Qiuchi refused at once. Proud and aloof since childhood, he despised the wealthy people of the capital who threw money around at theaters for their own amusement.
But after that, someone clearly began supporting the theater, improving everyone's conditions a little. No one knew which performer was being backed.
The second time Lan Qiuchi saw Fu Chengge was when he went to catch his junior sister, who had gone to perform at a private banquet without permission. He didn't find her. Sighing outside the club, Lan Qiuchi saw Fu Chengge surrounded by people as he descended the steps. Fu Chengge cast him a disdainful look from above, annoyed that he was blocking the way.
That very night, Fu Chengge's men threatened Lan Qiuchi.
Lan Qiuchi limped along, thinking: What a despicable rich man!
But life at the theater wasn't entirely without joy. Lan Qiuchi had a “kindred spirit.” He once wrote a little poem on the board where performers left their names. His handwriting was elegant and free. He never imagined anyone would respond to his verses, until one day he opened the board and found a reply in slender, graceful calligraphy, like a bird skimming across water.
The two exchanged messages and got along wonderfully.
Many days later, Lan Qiuchi decided to meet his kindred spirit, and waited for him in a corridor at the Summer Palace.
As the blue water met the sky, that evil rich man arrived!
Lan Qiuchi: “You and I, Fu Chengge, are sworn enemies!”
Theme: Though oceans may lie between us, we remain kindred spirits
