The Spring Breeze Sweeps Through Yumen Pass

The young master of the Suo family, Suo Ming, styled himself the "pampered parasite."

An orphan of a loyal official and heir to a distinguished family, he frequented pleasure houses and squandered his entire inheritance.

The emperor said, "Considering his circumstances, I grant him silver and gold to support him for the rest of his life."

He sat the imperial examination and was personally named its top scorer, but refused the title in court.

The emperor said, "His modesty is commendable. Let him serve in the Hongwen Academy."

That is, until senior officials in the capital submitted memorials one after another, claiming that the Suo fellow had bullied all their fine young sons.

The emperor said, "...This is beyond what anyone can tolerate."

And so Suo Ming was dismissed, banished from the capital, and sent to Yumen Pass to serve as a lowly company commander.

A civil official turning to military service was already a rare occurrence.

Having lost both power and wealth, with nothing but his looks left, Captain Suo became the biggest laughingstock in the capital, inside and outside the imperial city.

"Those who know me say my heart is heavy. Those who do not ask what I seek."

Suo Ming flicked his sleeves and said farewell to all his close companions and pretty boys, then departed with a carefree air. He had no idea where the road would lead or what the future held.
