[Mutual misunderstandings, silly romantic comedy, Mr. and Mrs. Smith trope, urban supernatural powers]
Pei Yu thinks there's something off about his partner.
The night he met his partner, humanity's strongest warrior, [Tianmei], broke through the supernatural defenses. The forces of the uncanny collapsed, and humanity won a great victory.
[Tianmei] then vanished without a trace. Many said he had died in the battle. They erected a monument to him and hailed him as the most brilliant savior humanity had ever known.
Pei Yu had just joined the Bureau at the time. Even as a promising newcomer, he didn't have clearance to meet [Tianmei]. He admired the senior agent, but would never get the chance to meet him.
That same night, Pei Yu met the love of his life. The young man standing in the snow was pale as paper, his eyes a mixture of confusion and emptiness. Beneath a streetlight, he looked like a ghost with nowhere to go.
Pei Yu fell for him in an instant.
He went over to ask if the young man needed help and invited him to stay at his place. A year later, after they had been intimate many times, Pei Yu knew Jian Zaimian had accepted that they were together.
But lately, Pei Yu has felt that something about his partner isn't quite right.
He is still often gloomy, rarely goes out, and doesn't want to see anyone but Pei Yu.
But whenever he does go out, they always run into supernatural incidents.
And the entities involved seem to be afraid of him.
Remembering how his beloved often has physical reactions unlike those of ordinary people, Pei Yu can't help wondering: Are they from different worlds, one human and one supernatural? Are they too different to ever see eye to eye?
Should he help Jian Zaimian hide the truth from the Bureau, or try to get the Bureau to accept him?
Jian Zaimian, formerly known by the codename [Tianmei], is hailed as humanity's strongest warrior and the Bureau's top field agent.
During the fiercest battle against the uncanny, humanity was at a disadvantage. With his back to the wall, Jian Zaimian willingly descended into monstrosity, becoming something no longer human. He turned the tide and defeated the enemy.
His transformation required time to adjust to, and the uncanny were temporarily suppressed. The Bureau gave Jian Zaimian an extended leave, and at last he could catch his breath and get some proper rest.
But Jian Zaimian had no idea how to rest. He had trained to fight the uncanny ever since he was a child, and as an adult he'd been a workaholic, always laboring at full intensity.
The Bureau wouldn't let him work, and he had no idea what to do with himself.
Just when he felt most lost, Pei Yu appeared.
Pei Yu was a junior at the Bureau. Jian Zaimian had heard his colleagues talk about him and say he was talented.
"He sees you as his target. He really wants to take over your job," a colleague said.
Jian Zaimian understood. Pei Yu wanted to topple him from his position as the Bureau's top field agent, take his job, and become a wolf who could surpass him.
Now Jian Zaimian finally saw what this so-called successor looked like.
Ambitious and cold-hearted, this junior had clearly set his sights on Jian Zaimian's position and was planning a rebellion.
Jian Zaimian looked him over critically. "You think you can replace me, kid?"
The Bureau had only just put him on leave when Pei Yu showed up. Jian Zaimian assumed the Bureau had sent him to keep an eye on him, so he followed Pei Yu home.
A workaholic is forced to take a year off, during which all he can do is develop a friends-with-benefits relationship with Pei Yu to break up the monotony. When Jian Zaimian's leave ends, the Bureau asks if he's willing to return to his post and keep working for the good of humanity.
Jian Zaimian: Who's the top field agent now?
Boss: Pei Yu.
Jian Zaimian: I'm coming back.
It's time to show Pei Yu that the old are wiser, and that he could never surpass Jian Zaimian.
