Synopsis
[You don't need to have read the original to enjoy this]
Fortune-telling at crossroads has become popular at school lately. They say one couple even got together that way, and that it's very accurate.
But I remember a childhood trauma involving a crossroads, and it left me deeply averse to both fortune-telling and crossroads. So, as I passed the crossroads I had to cross every day, I deliberately sped up and ran through it.
Then I crashed into someone: a slender boy in black, wearing earrings.
I'd never seen anyone so handsome in my life.
His expression was indifferent, and his cold eyes stared straight at me.
I was about to apologize for running into him, but instead of saying, "I'm sorry," I heard myself ask, "When will I meet the love of my life?"
I was stunned.
I hadn't wanted my fortune told about love, and I would never ask a stranger such a bizarre question.
But that was definitely my voice, coming from my own throat.
I was sure the boy would look at me strangely the next second, thinking he'd run into a crazy person.
To my surprise, the handsome boy with exquisite features curled his lips into a smile and tilted his head. "Now."
-
A week after I started dating the beautiful boy I met at the crossroads, the man who'd turned his love into hatred and tried to chop me with a knife died.
I took it as a good omen. Maybe my boyfriend was a lucky charm.
But lately, I've noticed that he sometimes shows up at the crossroads near my home. He just passes through without doing anything, and ignores anyone who tries to talk to him.
Sometimes he spots me watching him from beside the window and smiles as he waves.
...Something's not right.
One day, I decided to hide somewhere my boyfriend was sure to pass by and see what he was up to.
He passed through another crossroads, where a girl looking for a fortune-teller happened to be standing. She asked him, "Can the person I love and I be together?"
My boyfriend sneered cruelly. "Never."
...?
He disappeared into the thick fog, leaving the girl with his cold, dismissive answer. She dropped to her knees, laughing and crying, then pulled out a small knife and tried to cut her own throat.
...You can't do that!!!
-
A month into our relationship, I finally understood that my boyfriend, who was obsessed with fortune-telling and killing people, wasn't some lucky charm at all. He was the Grim Reaper incarnate!
I'd lost count of how many girls I'd saved from being bewitched into suicide, and how many times I'd stopped him from going to the crossroads. At last, I couldn't take it anymore. "If you tell fortunes for other people again, I'm never speaking to you!"
The previous second, my boyfriend had been pretending to be innocent. The next, his expression changed, and he grabbed my hand tightly. "You can't stop talking to me."
Me: "...What are you even trying to do?"
Him, looking innocent: "Destroy the world."
I'd already run out of energy to be shocked. Calmly, I said, "Wouldn't that mean we're all doomed?"
"That was the plan, but I've changed my mind. Everyone can die except you and me." His eyes glinted with amusement. "Then no one can bother us."
Oh.
Then you can live by yourself.
-
I'd always known my boyfriend had plenty of admirers, but none of them interfered with my life, so I didn't pay much attention.
But one day, I came across a girl crying on the phone. I hadn't planned to get involved, but when I heard my boyfriend's "code name" come out of her mouth, I stopped.
Voice on the phone: "Give up. He already likes someone."
Girl: "I don't care. I can't bear to let him go, sob, sob, sob..."
Voice on the phone: "...I'm curious what kind of person could make you this obsessed. Is there really no one else?"
Girl: "There's no one else... He's so gentle and kind, with smooth, straight black hair and a teardrop mole beneath his dark brown eyes. He usually wears dark clothes, sometimes a short black skirt, and he ranked ninth in our grade on the last exam."
Voice on the phone: "...? What's going on? That sounds like a girl."
It really did sound like a girl.
Wait, isn't she describing me!!! Why is this getting weirder and weirder?!
Later, my boyfriend's former admirers came charging at me, shouting about love and bonds and other things. They kept chanting his code name, then ran up to me and said, "I love you so much."
? Are they possessed? I don't think I even look like my boyfriend.
Whatever. If they want to love me, fine. I can't handle this bizarre world anymore. I give up.
But my boyfriend couldn't sit still. He stood in front of the crowd declaring their love for me and twisted his lips into a mocking smile. "You love her so much? Then go die."
Me: "..."

Notes for readers:
1. In the original, the male lead walks past crossroads, gives people who ask him questions negative answers, and leads them to hurt themselves, hurt others, or kill themselves. This part of his character won't change, but he won't get his way.
2. The reason the female lead knows his true nature but doesn't break up with him will become clear over time. There's also a reason his former admirers chant his code name while saying they like her in the blurb. They haven't mistaken her for someone else, and their "love" is real, though it's not romantic love.
3. The male lead really is bad, and he really is handsome. He's also extremely devoted to the female lead (he's head over heels for her).
4. There are some original elements of my own. The female lead has a somewhat unusual constitution. She won't suffer throughout the story, but the male lead may get a taste of romantic misery because he's so jealous.
5. At heart, this is a sweet, everyday romance, with most of the horror elements removed (though some will remain).
