A crafty but hopelessly clueless, overachieving young marquis bottom x a brilliant, lazy prince who is shrewd but can't be bothered to scheme
Lin Ning x Ying Congque (Ning-Que-istine~)
One day, Lin Ning awakened to find that he was living in a wildly over-the-top political intrigue novel. The male lead was Lu Tingfeng, the commander of the Embroidered Uniform Guard in charge of the Northern Pacification Office's prisons. The female lead was Gu Xinglan, the stunningly talented, famously beautiful Ninth Thousand Years, the Eastern Depot's chief eunuch.
Both of them had an almost pathological desire to control power. They would go through a torturous romance, loving and trying to kill each other as they eliminated rivals and political enemies, seized power, and ultimately climbed to the summit over countless corpses.
Lin Ning was one of the countless cannon-fodder characters who died second earliest.
As for why second, the biggest cannon fodder was his good friend, the second prince, Ying Congque.

Lin Ning was born into the Marquis of Changning's household. He and Ying Congque had grown up together, and everyone in the Great Liang Dynasty knew how close they were. It was perfectly normal for one to stay the night in the other's bed.
As Lin Ning saw it, the story should go like this: Ying Congque had no interest in the throne, was low-key and a good-for-nothing, and had the crown prince, his big brother, looking out for him. In the future, he would be sent to Jiangnan to live as an idle prince, while Lin Ning would spend the rest of his life eating and drinking well alongside his good friend, carefree and happy.
But after reading the whole story, Lin Ning was left reeling.
In the original story, the male lead Lu Tingfeng and the female lead Gu Xinglan both carried deep-seated vendettas and endured humiliation. The greatest humiliation they endured early on came from him and his friend Ying Congque.
While drinking and picking up women at an inn, Lin Ning ran into the Embroidered Uniform Guard on a case, fell in love with Lu Tingfeng at first sight, and insisted on forcing Lu Tingfeng into a relationship.
Ying Congque met the frail beauty Gu Xinglan at a palace banquet, fell in love at first sight, and insisted on forcing Gu Xinglan into a relationship.
The two of them were a cannon-fodder bottom and a cannon-fodder top. The vindictive leads gouged out one man's eyes and destroyed his family, while the other had both legs broken and was imprisoned in the second prince's residence, forced to watch as the Great Liang Dynasty changed hands.
Lin Ning: ...
Did these two lazy fish really have to force people into relationships?
And what happened to them being straight?
Lin Ning felt as though the sky had fallen. After thinking it over, he decided they could still be saved.
Day one, Lin Ning climbed into his friend's bed in the middle of the night:
