Yun Zhen is a celebrated beauty in Feng’an County: bright and charming, with a gentle nature and a gift for literature. Her only flaw is that she’s supposedly cursed, bringing death to her husbands. She’s married twice, and both husbands have died. Whenever Yun Zhen mentions her late husbands, she quietly sheds tears. She says only that she was unlucky and born at the wrong time. Fortunately, her late husbands left her plenty of property, enough to live on. Jing Feng, a lord who had just conquered Feng’an County with his army, happened to see Yun Zhen on the street one day. He followed her to her home as if he’d lost his soul. Rumors spread like wildfire: Yun Zhen looked just like the lord’s late wife. His subordinates were quick to use every means at their disposal to force the beauty to give herself to their lord. When Yun Zhen entered the tent, Jing Feng raised an eyebrow from behind his desk. Yun Zhen bowed gracefully. “May all be well with you, my lord.” Jing Feng set down his military book and demanded in a low voice, “What are you doing here?” Yun Zhen replied, “The county magistrate decided to present me to you as a beauty.” Jing Feng remained impassive. “How many times has this happened now?” The next day, the magistrate who had offered him the beauty was beheaded in public.
