Blurb:
In the scorching August heat, Xie Siruo returned to her hometown and opened a tattoo and piercing shop.
The following month, the shop was cited for violating regulations.
The female officer handing her the ticket had the character "Jing" on her badge. She looked up at Xie and said in a strictly professional tone, "Ms. Xie, please cooperate."
Xie Siruo knew the officer standing before her.
Years ago, that young woman had been beneath her, her lashes damp with pain, yet she refused to say stop. She only buried her face against Xie's neck and murmured, "Big sis, I can take it."
When the others had left, Xie Siruo smiled. "Why don't you call me Big Sis anymore?"
Jing Yun stared at her without a word.
Xie Siruo thought back to the days when they had squeezed together in a rented apartment.
Jing Yun's eyes were like snow: damp, cool, and soft, lit by the glow of a cheap light bulb, holding only Xie.
But later, Jing Yun drifted upward like gleaming snow, leaving Xie alone to live like mud rotting after the spring thaw.

Jing Yun returned to Xie Siruo's shop and asked her to pierce her cartilage.
"Are you sure you want it?" Xie Siruo put on her gloves and leaned close to Jing Yun's ear.
After setting down the piercing needle, she gently rubbed Jing Yun's earlobe with her fingertips. "An earring by itself is no fun."
Jing Yun looked up at her, her eyes holding too much, all pressed down into calm.
From the piercing chair to the bedroom, they lost control without needing to say a word.
Afterward, Xie Siruo stroked the police officer's trembling lashes. "Don't get mixed up with someone like me again."
Jing Yun caught her wrist, the corners of her eyes flushed red. "What gives you the right to say that?"
"Xie Siruo, don't you dare forget what happened between us in that rented apartment in H City."
Xie Siruo once had a snowflake tattooed over her pulse, believing it the most apt metaphor for Jing Yun.
As the fine needle pierced her skin, the burning sensation made her feel as if summer had arrived.
Until one day, Jing Yun rolled up her sleeve and exposed the secret she'd kept for years.
"Have you not forgotten me either?" the young officer asked softly.
Jing Yun did not know that tattoos fade over time.
And with each painful touch-up, Xie Siruo brought back the waves of heat the old fan in their rented apartment could never beat down.
Trying to recreate that time, Jing Yun rose on tiptoe and hugged her as she came home from work.
