As the stray black cat mooching off Cheng'an Temple, Mianmian had two daily pastimes: eating the offerings meant for "himself" and listening to gossip.
The gods weren't going to eat them anyway, so the mighty Cat King would graciously accept them.
As for the gossip...
It was nothing but rumors about the High Gods, Qingshan Sect, and all sorts of martial world news.
His ears had practically grown calluses from listening. Mianmian scratched one ear, bored out of his mind.
Then a sword cultivator named Li Xunwu moved in, and Mianmian found a new hobby: secretly watching the cultivator, who was always dressed in plain white and sat before the Buddha as though mourning.
Whenever the other man prayed, Mianmian would quietly climb atop the Buddha statue and enjoy the offerings meant for him.
When Li Xunwu noticed, he neither chased him away nor scolded him. He simply knelt there in silence.
From then on, before the morning bell and evening drum, in front of the solitary lamp and the ancient Buddha, the man continued to kneel as still as a jade statue.
Only the direction of his prayers had subtly shifted.
As Mianmian gradually got to know him, he discovered that the man actually admired the High God of the Black Cat!
No wonder he had never chased Mianmian away! He'd mistaken him for the High God's stand-in!
Mianmian's gaze at him changed at once, but Li Xunwu remained unfazed.

Just as Mianmian thought he would spend his whole life with one man, one cat, and one temple, Li Xunwu took him away from Cheng'an Temple.
Away from the temple where he had spent three whole years, unable to leave.
After traveling the world with Li Xunwu for a while, Mianmian learned a few things and became a little cat demon with a spiritual root.
The day Mianmian took human form, Li Xunwu happened to be napping.
As soon as he transformed, he climbed naked onto the other man's bed, hoping to surprise him.
But the moment he climbed up, Li Xunwu wrapped him in some clothes. The little cat demon tilted his head at Li Xunwu's complicated expression and rubbed against the palm reaching out to him.
Then he heard Li Xunwu say in a trembling voice, "From now on, how about I call you Wu Mian?"
Wu Mian.
He repeated the name to himself, feeling as though it carried a great deal of meaning.

Li Wumian was a cat demon. Ever since he started following his two-legged creature, he had been eating and drinking like a king every day.
He was very pleased with himself, convinced he had tamed a loyal mount.
Until that bold two-legged creature pushed him down and pounced on him!
You wicked two-legged creature! How dare you challenge the Cat King!
